New & PCOS question

Hello! :) I just joined MPF yesterday and I was happy to find some PCOS groups! I am a 31yo female, 5'5" and weight 307 lbs. :( Hubby and I have been TTC for about 5 years or so now, with no luck. I was just diagnosed a year ago with PCOS. Hoping to lose at least 100 lbs.

My question is: Most PCOS resources state that women with PCOS rarely have a period, sometimes not at all... Well, I started getting symptoms since I was a teenager. I would skip my period a few months. Once I skipped it for 9 whole months! It was off and on for years. Doc just gave me birth control to regulate. In my twenties (and even now), it started changing. I started getting extremely heavy periods. My periods sometimes last 2 weeks. Sometimes I spot all month. Occasionally I still skip a month or two. Are these also symptoms of PCOS??

From what I've read, the irregularity can work all kinds of ways - although the absence of periods or long cycles is the most well-known, I've also heard of short cycles, heavy periods, and periods that last multiple weeks.

Thank you! All I ever see is short or absent periods, so I wasn't sure if I was misdiagnosed. Thanks!
  • Hi there,

If you are TTC, I would talk to the doc about getting you off the BC and on to Metformin. It will help your periods and with your weight loss. I would have a period every 6 months and it was horrible. Once I lost about 30 lbs they started getting more normal and now that I have lost 50 lbs I am having completely normal periods :).. Good Luck on your journey :)

^^^ I second the Metformin. I went on it due to TTC and no periods at all. I am now 24 weeks pregnant. The Meformin brought my cycles back (although not right away - the dosage was too low at first).

    Thank you!

@fairie_marie, awesome job on the 50+ lbs down!

@miranda_mom, that is great news on the pregnancy! :) About how long after you started the metformin did you get pregnant? I
was put on a low dose almost a year ago. Took it for 5 months or so and didn't see a difference. Stopped taking it and didn't think about letting my doc know. Bad! Bad, I know. I will have to make an appt and ask her to up the dosage. Thanks! :)

I started taking it in April 2012. I noticed an immediate reduction in my hair loss but was not getting a period either. (At that point, I had not had one for two months). In July 2012, dosage was changed from 1000 mg a day to 2000 mg a day. I got a period almost immediately and was pretty regular from there on out (two months was the longest I went). I got pregnant in May 2013. So it did take some time. However, you should also know that I am 35 so not as young as I used to be, LOL.

Thank you for mentioning the hair loss! I am going to my doctor tomorrow and hope that she will prescribe me metformin. I know it may take some time for TTC but mostly I am concerned about the amount of hair I have been losing lately! I wasn't sure if met would help so good to hear from someone that it helped them!

If I remember correctly it did take a few months. That's pretty normal for hair because its life cycle is about three months. I can tell you though that for me, the change was dramatic. I was losing a ton of hair and then hardly anything. It also made me ovulate, obviously!

That's awesome news! Congrats on the pregnancy!
  • Also make sure they check your thyriod. If thats off, then your cycles will be as well and you will loose hair. Having your thyroid in check will also help you stay pregnant once you finally get your 2 pink lines.

Thank you! I've had it checked before (mom has hypothyroidism) and it always some out normal. Just once it was abnormal, they checked it again and said it was normal...
