Weight/BMI limit for Clomid?

Hey everyone!
I did some research when I last went to see my OB/GYN and I was totally expecting her to put me on Clomid in order to TTC. I was told to lose 65 pounds. I've thinking that my doctor was trying to be kind and gave me a more attainable number. I did the calculation and 185 would still put me in the "obese" range for BMI. I figured that I need to be 165 to go from "obese" to "overweight".
A thought just occurred to me. Is there a weight or BMI limit to be placed on Clomid or any fertility drugs for that matter? Is that why my doctor told me 185? That would mean my BMI would be around 34. Please let me know if anyone has any experience with this. Thanks!

My fertility dr told me it works best for those under 250 while also being on metformin. If at or over 250 the studies show only a 5% success rate even with the use of iui ......however I am above the 250 and my doc is willing to try.... he also knows that I have lost over 100 labs........ aside for drug success your doc could be concerned with the increased risk for those over 200 getting pregnant0

Such a great question! I was one it for 3 months when I was around 240-250 along with the met and I only Ovulated once. My doc told me that if after 3 months on it she would have to refer me to a specialist.. I decided to try the weight loss route first.. I go see her again on Friday so lets she what she has to say now that I am 50 lbs lighter..0

I had a BMI of almost 52 when my OBGYN put me on Clomid. I did 5 rounds at different doses, and only ovulated once, so she referred me to a specialist. Now that I have a BMI of about 43 (5'4" 250 pounds), my RE will only prescribe me a different type of fertility med once I lose another 10 pounds (BMI of 42). Apparently, that is the magic number. A lot of fertility clinics around MN will only treat you if you are at a BMI of 37.0

My doctor said nothing...... and I conceived my 1st with 3 cycles of Clomid and I was over 300 at the time... I think it depends on the doctor........Goodluck0

In Australia most specialist want to see you under a BMI of 34. Though for clomid they are a little more relaxed about the BMI.0

My RE put me on Clomid and Metformin when I was around 300 lbs. It didn't work for me, so I had ovarian drilling and then started Femara. I had a chemical pregnancy my 1st cycle and got pregnant my 2nd cycle. I'm sure it depends on the doctor though.0

Some of the research I've read has suggested that clomid is less effective for higher BMIs, and you can only use it for a limited number of cycles. So I'm guessing your doctor wants to give you a good chance of conceiving when you do use it... and therefore wants you to lose the weight FIRST and then go on it.
And as far as the number, you're right they probably do want to give you a more attainable number... you probably don't want to wait a year or more to start, so they are using their own experience to figure out a number that would give you a good chance. If you would feel more comfortable waiting until you get to 165 so you're out of the "obese" range, then you could suggest that to your doctor, or just make that your own personal goal!
Because you're right, the more you lose, the better chance you'll have (within reason of course) but you have to balance that with your own timeline for when you want to have children... going years and years of trying is something that can really weigh on someone and tear you down emotionally, so you have to figure out what is going to work best for you.0 -
I was 320 lbs when I was put on Clomid. We tried it for six months and it didn't work for us. Now I'm working on losing weight (at 277 lbs now and hoping to get to 150-170 lbs) and then we're going to try again. I know my doctor said it will help greatly if I was to lose some weight, but he still prescribed it for me even though I was a heavy weight at the time.0
