Diabetes

I'm wondering if anyone else in the group is diabetic or pre-diabetic (insulin resistant, hyperglycemia, any of those other terms where you monitor your sugars).
I am type 2 x 5 years now... I managed to stay diet controlled for a long time but now take metformin.
Anyways one of the things im monitoring on the journey is my blood sugars... They have not been stable and my weight loss shows it... It is very frustrating because it does impact or stall weight loss... Now it's not an excuse if I put my fork down and got off my butt
More I would lose weight and have better diabetes control... But it does still impact me...
So I was wondering if their are any other fellow diabetics in our group....

I am type 2 diabetic. Have been for about 10 years. I had my sugars in moderate control. My Ha1c (Is that right? I usually get the letters mixed up!) has been about 6.8 always. Day to day I usually was under 8 (I am Canadian, I am not sure how that translates to the American way of keeping track! but between 4 and 7 mmol is normal.) but over 7. They say that's not too bad.
Since I really started trying to lose weight this year, following a surgery I had last year, my Ha1c has gotten down to 6, that was three months ago. I go next week for my next labs so here's hoping it's gone down more as I want to reduce the meds! You will definitely see an improvement if you watch your carbs and get up and exercise more. The dieticians I have seen haven't been that helpful - they are always saying I need to have more carbs, even when my b.g. showed me that I could not tolerate much more than one serving per meal (not that I kept to that!) Their solution was always to up the meds - uh, no. One thing I have found since I am exercising more is that I CAN eat more carbs! Not that I am overdoing it, but where I couldn't used to eat oatmeal for breakfast, now I can, and have normal (under 6 mmol) b.g. levels. This is GREAT because I LOVE oatmeal!! LOL!
I just wish I had smartened up sooner and got exercising sooner too. Keep at it, things will improve!0 -
Iquilttoo: I do find that a great way to keep my sugars down is to exercise right after a meal especially if it's high in carbs... I am finally feeling better after being sick so hopefully my sugar goes back down... I don't get terribly high sugars and my A1C usually around 6 so I do keep things well.. But when I get sick my sugar goes up my weight loss stalls and I feel sluggish...
My diabetes has effected my immune system more then anything else so i end up sick easy and then it starts a nasty cycle!
I also wish I had smartened up sooner I hate feeling this way and I'm afraid I won't get bAck to diet control only0 -
I guess I have been fortunate that I am not getting sicker more often. I used to get bronchitis all the time but that was made worse because I smoked. (I quit about 20 years ago.) I haven't had it more than three times in the past 10 years since I was diagnosed with diabetes. I have had other problems like infections after surgery, which is really not good! So I am not looking forward to the hernia surgery I will be having sometime next year. Anyway sounds like you know what affects you and how, so you're well on your way to improved health. Even if you wind up still having to take a metformin or two every day, that's a far cry from having to go the insulin route, which is what I really am hoping to avoid! I have a hard enough time getting flu shots (today!) never mind having to poke myself every single meal!0

Iquilttoo: I quit smoking about 2 years ago... I just got tired of trying to smoke in the cold lol!
I too get all types of infections easily my immune system is shot... But I also can't have th flu shot... Last time I got it I almost died... So I get to battle it the old fashioned way when I get the flu... via hot tea and Advil!
I just learned that I cannot drink fruit smoothies from McDonald's... 1 hour post fruit smoothie and my sugar is 12.8... I am really tryin to eliminate those pesky foods that effect me!!! I know fruit isn't that good for me but I love it so much!
I am going to try sugar lowering trick 3 and go for a walk!!0
