Give me your best advice!

I am a newbie runner. I've done a few 5k's in the past and am trying to start up again! I am doing a half marathon in february and following Jeff Galloway's program of running 30 min on T/Th and a longer run on Saturday. My longest run so far has been 5 miles (I did walk 3 minutes). I am also losing weight, so training on a 500 calorie deficit. I usually eat around 1600-1700 net per day.

So give me your best advice on becoming a long distance runner. Best products? Things to know? Training to follow? What's your favorite food to eat before a race for energy? I literally gag from the GU's. Blah. My goal is to finish the 1/2 marathon in under 2:30, preferably upright!

Thanks!

First of all.... netting 500 calories is a HORRIBLE idea. Not just for a sedentary person, but it's even worse for a long distance runner. You have to fuel not only your every day life, but your training. I lost my first 20 lbs netting at 1350 a day and it worked great. I ended up eating around 2000 a day because I ate exercise calories back. All went perfectly. Never felt too fatigued.

Whoops... I should have made myself more clear. I have a total deficit of 500 calories, I net about 1700 per day. Phew.

P.S... love your lab! I have a black and yellow :)

My best piece of advice: "Go to your local running store and have them fit you for shoes."
  • I personally do not like GU, for my longer runs I prefer sports beans or Cliff shots. My advice would be to hydrate make sure you hydrate before your long run. I am also training for my first half in March, I am following Hal Higdon training schedule. What Half marathon are you running?

That's on my list! I have Gel Keyano's right now that I'm not crazy about, but they were just an amazon purchase with no proper fitting done. I do LOVE my real flex but can't take them out for more than 3 miles without my hips killing me. I'm hoping to go get new shoes in the next two weeks.

I'm doing the "26.2 with Donna" In Jax, FL. But just the half marathon portion. They should change the name  What about you? I've never seen sports beans but haven't really looked for them either. I do love the gatorage chews.... soo good. Beans are next on my list to try now. Thanks!

Products... first, whatever shoes you are fitted for.
Cold weather gear (I like Asics Thermopolis).
    Good socks.
    Things to know?
Training is training, racing is racing.
    Build your mileage up slowly.
You will get faster by running slow miles over and over.
    Training to follow?
    I prefer Hal Higdon.
What's your favorite food to eat before a race for energy?
Nothing - you should be adequately fueled through your normal intake, if your normal intake is sufficient. But just starting out, I get the emotional need to "be fueled," and I can assure you that you'll be fine. Eat like a pig after you're done running.

Most of it's been covered but I want to put another vote out there for Hal Higdon. I love his training programs. Also, Gu, beans, gels and all of that are not necessary for a Half Marathon distance. So don't waste your time or money on them. Spend your money on shoes.

Something you should buy....body glide! Chafing happens when you least expect it and it sucks to shower after you have chaffed.

ETA: Check out the Run like a mother, Train like a mother books and podcasts.

I found the sports beans at a running store where I got fitted for my shoes. I used to use asics and than used Reebok for a while but now I am using Brooks and I love them. Not sure I will ever go back to any other shoe. Getting fitted for shoes and inserts really made a difference for me on my knee pain. Have not had any knee pain since I started using my brooks.

I live in Phoenix AZ so I am running the Phoenix Half Marathon. Last year I ran the 10k and I really liked how they ran the race.

    I can't stress this enough!

Shoes are on the top of the list!
