Fish

Okay so I typically hate fish. With a fiery passion. Unless it's drenched in batter (beer batter, mmmm) and deep fried until it no longer resembles fish.
However, there are so many other things that I 'hated' that I have found that I didn't actually hate at all - they just weren't being prepared right, and that impacted my opinion of them. I'm hoping the same can be said for fish.
What I want is some ideas or tips on how to make delicious fish. I've never cooked fish before (unless throwing frozen fish sticks in the oven counts) so something fairly simple and fail-proof would be awesome if it exists.
Thanks in advance!!

A halibut steak, pan fried in a little bit butter with garlic and finished with lemon is super easy and yummy too. Just don't overcook it or it will get a bit rubbery.0

If I can find it, I will post the tomato-fish-baked dish recipe that I got as a teen. It is so tasty! But the directions were very specific, and I'm not sure if that cookbook survived my big flood in 09. Will keep you posted
Edited to add: I also mostly dislike fish.0 -

Thanks for looking! I'll keep an eye out for it :-)0 -
I have tried over and over and I just can't get into fish except for lemon and dill baked salmon... I wouldn't know how to do it because i couldn't even touch raw fish but it's yummy...0

Jess, I just fixed something that was pretty good. With real fish, probably wonderful. I fried up some mahi, mahi burgers (from Costco) topped with trader joes bruschetta sauce, then dumped a bunch of baby leaf spinach over top. Covered and let it steam until the spinach wilted.
I put a pinch of cojita cheese on top and enjoyed.
Fresh cod or tilapia would be wonderful this way. The original recipe was for foil packets with squash instead of spinach, and grilled. Still it was not bad at all.0 -
I don't have the tomato-fish-yummy recipe anymore I thought that might have been one of the books that didn't make it, it was handwritten recipes I got while I was working in a bush camp one summer as a teen (for those in Ontario, I was an Ontario Junior Ranger). I wish I could remember exactly how it went, because it was easy and tasty.0

Tilapia is an easy fish to make.
you can put it on a pan w/some oil (I have a grill pan and I put it on with some oil and chilli pepper seasoning) as it is cooking and when it is all cooked I chop it up.
I then make some fish tacos with it (I usually get some broccoli slaw and some ranch dressing) and it's delish.
I've also cooked it in the oven w/a dazzle of lemon juice and sauted broccoli in olive oil on the stove while it was cooking and topped the broccoli (in a plate) with the fish) w/a side of rice.
Grilled Tuna steaks marinated in italian dressing is also very delish!0 -
mahi mahi, tuna or salmon on the grill are awesome. Especially when wanting to keep it healthy.
But a favorite (not so healhty) of mine is red fish seasoned with tony chachere's (Cajun Seasoning) and pan fired in butter. Melts in your mouth.
Since you are not too fond of fish stay with a firm scaled white fish. Not as fishy tasting as some of the skinned fish such as catfish.0 -
Do you have a Trader Joes near you? They have great fish, already marinated, just cook and go! So good!0

I found a recipe very similar to the one I was thinking of with the tomatoes and baked...
http://realfood.tesco.com/recipes/baked-fish-with-tomato-and-herbs.html
It is not exactly the same, the one I know did not have any lemons on the fish, but it is otherwise essentially the same I think there might have been some onion in the one I had.0 -
Ceviche!
Get some frozen white fish (Basa fish works great for this), cube while frozen, rinse to thaw, then "cook" in citrus juice until opaque. Add diced tomato, onion, jicama, cilantro, avocado tossed in lime juice. Yummy. When I'm lazy I use the pre-cut pico de gallo from the grocery store. It's delicious also with mango or pineapple.0 -
If you want to cook a fillet... dredge it in flour (with spices mixed in garlic, salt pepper, lemon pepper (I once added wasabi powder)). Then fast fry it in garlic butter. So tasty and actually very simple and fast. I would use a smaller white fish. If you want to eat it with a little tomato sauce.
Or for the more brave. sesame ginger albacore tuna. Sear loin then use a mixture of sesame seeds, ginger, sesame oil, salt and pepper and coat the outside. Use cling wrap to wrap the whole thing like a tube. Cut it in circles and eat it on salads. This stuff is AMAZING!!! But it is raw in the middle, so use your food safety common sense. Num num num num!!! lol!
Those are the best recipes I have, I'm a sometimes fish eater.0 -
So Jess! Did you try any of them????0
