Exercise

Hi all,

I am 2 weeks post op and have been walking and doing the recumbent bike and feeling stronger every day. In support group one girl said she waited 12 weeks to start exercising (no idea why), other said only walking first 8 weeks, a few started weights and cardio from the beginning.

I tried doing a squat this morning and my stomach is definitely not ready for that, lol. I do a little bicep and tricep work with a 4 lb weight (20 reps twice) should I be doing more reps? Can I do this light arm work everyday?

I was wondering how soon I can add on additional exercises and what anyone recommends. I belong to a gym but no pool.

Hoping for some ideas/suggestions.

Thanks,
Gerri

You can definately do more with your arms. Low weight with high reps will keep you flexible and avoid injury but you still need to challange your muscle. I would reccomend 3 or 4 sets of 12-15 reps. When you can do 4x15 comfortably add some weight and start again (4x10, 4x12, 4x15). Work your biceps and triceps the same day (I do a combo; biceps, then triceps then 30 sec rest - repeat). Rest is important - at light weights you can go almost every day but you do need a day of rest every few days. Listen to your body and slowly add chest, lats and back. I am still avoiding core (sleeved 9/26) but am in gym 5x week.

    Thanks for the tips.
Needless to say I have never exercised in my life so I'm a bit lost as to what to do and where to start.
Do you know when we can go anything involving the core??

Tried the elliptical today made 8 mins!! Woo hoo, it was tough

    Thanks again

Check with your Dr about core work - very individualized, based on how you are healing. As for other exercises; most gyms give new members 1 or 2 free basic sessions with a trainer. Take one. They will teach you the basic circuit machines and help you get started safely. It's important to know how to use the machines so you can avoid injury.
  • I would definately ask the doc for exercise recommendations. My doc said to just do walking until 3 months out and pretty well healed, then start strength training and increase intensity and duration on cardio. I think this is a very individual thing and depends on what other issues you may have and where things were when you had the surgery.

It sounds like you are doing great!!

I have been working with free weights for my arms (to fight the flab) and walking since the day I was released from the hospital. I am 7 weeks out today and have been doing leg lifts, the stairs at work, the recumbant bike and Wii fit for at least 2 weeks. I exercise everyday but I do different things every day so I don't get bored or just work the same parts of my body all the time. I am over a month out and feel pretty great. I will say though that I started to do sit ups and crunches and I was told by my Nurse Practitioner to hold off on core excercises for a couple months. They did clear me to swim at my 1 month visit.

I am not medical professional and am not saying you should do any of these but you may want to get clarification from someone that is a medical professional as to when you can start getting more active.

    Best wishes!
  • My dr. said to wait 8 weeks to do core workouts. Don't rush yourself. You'll do more harm than good.
    Good luck in your journey!

Got the same advice for core - 8 weeks. Sleeved 9/26 and just started doing exercises that also work core (Squats and deadlifts).
