I drink a LOT of Crystal Light. But I hear so many bad things about it and I am wondering about it being good or bad. I hear evidence on both sides and really don't know what to do. I also if I drink soda, drink diet. So any ideas would be welcome!

I think you are going to get a lot of opinion replies. If you are really concerned you need to talk to your doctor, unless you already know what the doc will say and just don't want to hear it?? So in my world view, a little bit won't hurt. If it is all you drink, then you are over doing it. I will say that since giving it up, I find it tastes rather nasty now. On the other hand I do like some flavor now and then but I mostly get that from my coffee daily.
Aspartame is chemically produced so I tend to trust it even less than sugar. I tried Splenda, but had a reaction to it, so I'm all for water, coffee, and tea.
Next opinion, please. :happy:0 -
My opinion... It has it risks, for me the benefits out weigh those risks cause of my diabetes however I do try and sweeten naturally if I can... And I think that I really have no intention of giving up my diet coke lol! I did cut back a lot though! Like Dan said your best bet is talking to your doctor and doing some research on what's best for you with your doctor!
I think that there are so many sweeteners it's so hard to choose though! I prefer Splenda for taste only!0 -
So I've decided to start off, alternate one bottle of water and then one bottle of crystal light. And I had my bottle of water already, and it was NOT that bad.. So I'm making progress!0

You gotta start somewhere.
OPINION ALERT!
I stand with Dan on this one. Moderation in all things; including moderation.
The less Not-Water I drink, the better I feel in general. But I love my bubbles and must have my pop.
Look...I quit drinkin', I quit smokin', and I gave up sugared soda and fast food to get this far.
You would have to be a pretty mean so and so to deprive me of the occasional Diet Coke. However I am now prepared to concede that using cola beverages as my primary means of hydration was a poor and unsustainable lifestyle choice.
I aim for 75% water and 25% Not Water...but you must find your own ratios.0 -
Diet Coke is my poison of choice. A horrible way to put it, but I don't smoke, use and I hardly drink. I'm not crazy about coffee and most other drinks are sugar-filled bombs. I've changed my eating habits and exercising habits and am slowly working my water consumption up. I LOVE my Diet Coke... it gives me caffeine and I love the taste. I have no intention of giving it up.
I personally find Crystal Light too strong, but if that's what you like .... then go for it. I went to weight management classes and they said one of the things about a goal: is if you could live with it and would you want to.
I have to go with the guys on this... I'd say moderation. Or use it as a treat instead of a staple. I have a deal with myself... I have to finish 24oz of water before I can have a can of Diet Coke. That keeps them both in line.
I also use Splenda in my tea, instead of the other sweeteners, it seems to be the least harmful.
Anyway, decide what works best for you... you can always reevaluate later.0 -
Personally, I try to stay away from anything that's chemically based, and I've always enjoyed water with a spritz of lemon or lime, so it wasn't a big leap. However, it was very hard saying goodbye to Coke Zero, which was my long-time love. We still see each other from time to time, stolen sips in darkened rooms, a smoldering glance through the window of the vending machine as I walk down the hall. However, it now causes instantaneous hiccups with my sleeve, so I've resigned myself to fond memories of our affair and "we'll always have Paris" :P
That said, if your doc hasn't red lighted it, it doesn't make you sick, and you're not solely existing on Crystal Light, I don't see the harm in getting more liquid intake. Just my .020 -
i used to be a pepsi max fanatic. i carried a bottle around with me everywhere, like a security blanket. i gave up all pop and fizzy water before i had my sleeve in june. i learned to like water (yuck), because i had to. now, almost 6 months later, i find that everything else tastes funny. i do drink one cup of coffee with flavored creamer in the morning, gotta get some caffeine in, right? i have had the occasional sip of pop-seriously maybe total of a 1/2 pop in the last couple of months-but a swallow is enough. i do drink crystal light, or the walmart equivalent, once in a while, but i have to water it down in order to drink it. if anyone ever told me i'd ever drink 95% water, i'd have laughed my butt off!
i have heard good and bad things about sugar substitutes and am going to do some more research into the subject so i can make an informed choice. i saw one news story about how aspartame turns into formaldehyde in our systems and can cause us to feel ill all the time. but, i don't know if going back to real sugar would be any better. so, i have no real answers, but the "all things in moderation" saying seems to be a good one.0 -
As Dan said, you'll get lots of opinions, and like him, I say moderation. It is VERY had to give up sugar and the calories in it and artificial sweetener, but the less chemically produced food like products we eat, the better I think we'll be.
Do some research on how these products are made. When I learned splenda is two chlorine molecules bonded with a sugar molecule, I was grossed out. I also wonder how the FDA feels its safe for us to eat this chlorine based product. Does that mean I don't ever consume it; no. But I limit my consumption and try to flush my body with lots of water.
Good luck to you, nothing about this process is easy.

I am not going to waster the Crystal Light mix ins that I already have, however when they are gone I am going to try and completely switch over to just water. I am alternating the water with the crystal light so I will be ready when the time comes. Thank you all for your opinions!0

I personally try to avoid that kind of drinks. I don't drink crystal light, or those flavored waters... I also don't drink any juice or energy drinks, not even gatorade. I drink soda once every two weeks maybe, and not diet, I do have my regular stuff when I choose to drink it.0
