well - just given the CaadX a quick 500km check-up on the wheels... one slightly loose spoke in the back wheel and about 1mm run-out in the rear, a little less on the front... took longer to find the spoke-key than it did to get them running true again - I'm thinking it's just the wheels settling in - after all there's quite a bit of force being exerted from the disk brakes (not to mention the 108kg lump bouncing up and down on the pedals )

Anyway - all running nice and true again, nice even spoke tension, and I've even "stress relieved" the spokes and re-checked the truing, so it shouldn't sound like someone tuning a Harp at the start of the next ride.

the long bolt that's supplies with the SKS kit is a M5 bolt... so, if that's the correct diameter bolt for the fork drilling, you need a M5.

    Breaking it down...

M5x50mm Stainless Steel 4mm Allen Socket Cap Bolt.

    M5 = 5mm diameter thread x 0.8mm pitch.

50mm = length from the underside of the bolt head to the tip of the other end where the nut threads on.

Stainless Steel = self explanatory - you don't want it to rust (I got a marine grade one...)

4mm Allen Socket = tightens with a 4mm allen key

Cap Bolt = a "squared off" head a bit like this one below...

Brill - that's great to know, thanks! And I think that's who I ordered the M4 screws from too!! Not like they cost enough to worry about having ordered the wrong ones - I tried, but I failed

You're so thorough - 500km on your new steed already is fantastic going!

Don't think I've ever checked my wheels or spokes :noway:

Strangely Fran, the ebay place are only a couple of miles away... they're in Horbury (a couple of miles the other side of Wakefield)...

As to the "routine service" - well - it's sort of what we used to offer when I was the "Saturday Lad" (jeebus but thats some time ago) when people bought complete bikes... Plus, i'm one of those wierdos that actually finds bike fettling curiously theraputic, especially wheelbuilding or truing...

well, next bit of fiddling with the CaadX can now take place - just took delivery this morning of a pair of BB30 Shims to allow the fitting of my Shimano Compact chainset (complete with the Stages Power Meter) into the BB30 based frame of the CaadX. Frankly, I'm not going to miss the 36/46 cross specific ratio's - it's surprising how losing a couple of teeth of easier gears knocks lumps out of my knees on the climbing, and of course 4 teeth less on the higher gears probably has a certain effect on the top speeds - though in fairness, all it really meant was I was actually using the bottom end of the Cassette.

But the main thing is, of course, getting the power meter data back from out on the road - especially in view of having just got an up to date FTP test in the bag now...

Just looked at the "installation instructions" and it's a bit... er... agricultural - i.e. "Begin the installation by hand, and complete by giving a couple of taps with a rubber hammer. So - Put it in place then twatt it then... Hmmm. Might use my home made bearing press instead.

Yep - I installed the new version of the iPad app a couple of days ago, and it informed me that the firmware needed updating on the meter. Took around 5 minutes (after fitting YET ANOTHER new CR2032 - it's eating the buggers at the moment - though in fairness, I bought a job lot on fleabay and when I've tested 'em with the multimeter they're barely over 3V out of the packaging. Tried a new one from local Pikey supermarket (lidl had 'em 6 pack for £1.50... so I bought the entire stock of 'em ) which were 3.3v... so I'm reckoning the fleabay duracells were either fakes or munged.)

It's worked fine since - even the "high speed reading" mode - I'm gonna get a ride in this morning on the CaadX and then try and swap the powermeter and ultegra chainset onto the bike.

I'm sort of thinking that they have done a complete rewrite on the firmware, and there MAY have been some alterations to the power management software routines slipped in there on the QT, under the pretext of adding in a battery managment option.

    Fettling Time...

And it didn't QUITE work out how I'd wanted.

Idea was to remove the FSA crankset from the CaadX, and the old Ultegra which was currently on the Planet-X for trainer duties, swap the big ring from the FSA onto the Ultegra spider keeping the 34T shimano granny gear, and fit the Stages powermeter crankarm to the other side.

That way I'd keep the 46T big ring to keep the front mech in the same place and save extending the chain.

Sadly, didn't work - the FSA's "chain catching pin" that stops the chain falling down between ring and arm in case of overshifts is riveted in place and very long to allow for the hollow back of the gossamer crank.

So, I reverted to fitting the Ultegra crankset "As Is" - i.e. 34/50 compact, complete with the stages gizmo. Raised the front mech by the difference in height of the 50T ring as opposed to the 46 (call it 6mm) and, of course, this meant that the chain was being asked to go around another 4T. Fortunately, the CaadX has the same chain fitted as I've been running all summer, so I'd got a pile of chain-offcuts and "missing links" which allowed a quick and dirty fix. All told I think it took longer to re-align and calibrate the front mech. for the far more difficult task of working with a compact crankset jumping a 16T difference than the 'cross specific 36/46 FSA's 10T gap.

Then of course, I also had to swap the pedals over keeping the tatty ones on the road over winter, while the good ones stay indoors for the trainer bike, along with my ancient non-series FC-R700 compact complete with slightly creaky TA replacement chainrings.

Yeah - faffing with bikes - at least I didn't actually BREAK anything

Still - at least I've got a result now...
