Pure gym, any good?

Ok,I'm looking to change gyms and have a Pure Gym near by. I will go in and take a look but for now is anyone a member on here and do you like the gyms facilities/ classes?

Thanks :)

  • Hi,

I recentrly joined The Gym Group gym in London Ealing which is similar concept. There are few free classes but they are in times I don't really get to participate. There are quite a few personal trainers working as freelance and some of them offer classes for additional cost.
Apart form that there are loads of tredmills, crosstrainers, bikes and rowing machines to do the cardio. The weight session gets quite busy on weekday evenings but still you can manage some workout.
It is very basic but then you don't have to pay for gym, sauna and all the other extras you don't really use in other gyms.
    Hope this helps ;)

Thank you for the reply :)
  • I'm a member of The Gym in Ipswich which sounds similar. I far prefer it to other gyms I have belonged to before. I pay for what I want to use, not the pool, sauna, fancy changing rooms etc, just machines and weights.

Also, because there are very few classes (spin, circuits and abs only) it doesn't attract the lycra clad gym-bunnies. I know it's my hang up, but I feel inadequate around them! I far prefer to be surrounded by 'normal' people like me trying to shed a few pounds by sweating and working hard!

Best idea is to get a tour of the gym and see for yourself what it's like. Try visiting at a time similar to the time you plan to work out and you'll get an idea of how busy it gets.

  • I am a member of Pure Gym and have been for over a year now, I think they are brilliant I have never found a problem with the gyms being too busy as their is lots of equipment and all of it is the newest and best stuff. Although there is a lot of cardio machines you shouldn't find a problem with not having enough weights either. Oh and many of the classes are free as well and they are great fun.

Bumping to watch responses. The Gym are shortly opening a branch in Norwich and I'll be interested to see how busy it gets as it'll be the only cheap gym in the area, and it's right in the city centre so I just imagine it being manic, especially after work and weekends, which is when I have to work out.

They're about to finish one in Dundee! I'm excited because I miss having 24hrs access.

They're in trouble because if I'm excited about something, then I go in there and they have crap equipment, there'll be a tantrum.

They're actually quite decent. I use it when i'm away from my barracks for more than a few weeks as there is no minimum term contract. Only downside is that the dumbells only go up to 36KG.

Make sure you search online for a promotional code though, I recently used one which had no joining fee which saved me about £25

Well that would wipe out the majority of my presses and pulls.

Well I've been for a chat with the sales office, and it appears to be dog egg.

There may be an open day on the 25th for me to check it out, but it looks like I'll continue to pay double for a poorly equipped gym that at least has more dumbbells and somewhere to park.

If they have more than one squat rack, more than one bench press, and a lifting area and enough olympic bars to go round, I may change my mind.

The one near where I live has lots of dumbells, though limited in the weight...

It has two squat racks, a smith machine, about 10 benches, about 5 olympic bars and free parking

I forgot to an update. They have two squat racks which double as two bench press stations. Parking and over crowding is a huge issue, but attending first thing in the morning had solved both problems. Because I joined before it opened, I'm paying a quarter the price I was paying at the previous gym.

They have a landmine that I substitute heavy rows for, and I'm going to bring bands in next time I need heavy presses.

I'm at Pure Gym at Bournemouth. Pretty good for the next to nothing I pay for it. I only train with the free weights and they have a fairly decent set up. Loads of cardio equipment and open 24/7.

I do have to pick my times to train though as trying to get a squat rack anytime between 9am and 9pm is a pain in the *kitten*

I'm a member of Pure Gym coventry and I actually rate it highly! You cant moan at 17.99 a month and i havent yet found a time where i couldnt get on something I wanted to use. Free parking and no exit fee are a bonus but to be honest i'll keep my membership here for a long time to come.

Does anyone know if you can go into any puregym with your membership? i'm just thinking about UK holidays and finding a nearest one etc.

You can use any gym, but you must upgrade to the £24.99 per month package. However, for those in/near London, you pay that already, so you effectively have it already. Those further out need to upgrade to use multiple gyms though.

For reference, I'm a member at Pure Gym Walton-on-Thames, so I get access to all Pure gyms across the UK.

Checked their website but they don't have a Pure Gym in Newham! They could open one in Westfield Stratford!
  • Just joined one opening soon in Redditch, been round on the induction and looks good!

I am at PG Nottingham, and it is amazing. Friendly and the staff really know their stuff. Loads of great free classes too, and the weights room has all the stuff I need.

tbh, i go to pure gym only because its close to my flat and it's cheap. Apart from that, it has the basics, always busy and packed with people, so be sure to make lots of gym buddies to get the equipment. Also, have very limited dumbbells, max weight is like 36kg...
