What to do with phone for a half

I'm running a half-marathon (Kiawah) tomorrow and the bag drop area is listed as "unsecure". I'd like to have my phone after the race.

Do you think it's worth the risk to leave the phone (brand-new iPhone) in the drop-off area? I've certainly never had an issue finding stuff I've dropped off at races. I have a Spi Belt but I'd prefer not to carry the phone (or the belt) with me as this will be a PR effort.

I've never had problems with items left at a bag check either. If it's in a backpack you're probably fine, if in doubt leave it with a friend (who will then have to cheer for you at the finish line) or leave it locked in your car.

    Good luck on the PR!

Yeah, normally I would leave it in my car but in this case the parking area is far from the start / finish and there are shuttles, etc. to take you there. In the meantime I want to be watching my friends as they finish. I will probably just leave it in my backpack.

Just curious if anyone has had any horror stories with stuff getting lost / stolen at bag checks. I don't think I've ever heard of that happening.

Check that you can use your back pack for bag check. All the races that I have done since Boston have required clear bags (usually provided at packet pickup) for gear check.

Put in a zippered pocket of a coat/jacket, inside your gear bag - then it's not visible and they'll be some extra protection for it.

I never had a problem, but I also use fairly plain looking plastic bags that don't say "hey this guy probably has awesome stuff in here."

Kiawah is bucking the trend and requiring you bring your own bag to check-in -- I like the idea; reduces waste. Also, you can get a sturdier bag that way. At Boston last year nearly everyone's bag fell apart.

Can you wear it on your arm? Or will it interfere with your running?

I wear a small bum bag, use it for keys money etc.

Put it in the spi-belt or just carry it in your hand.

I find this interesting. I've done a race since the marathon, in boston, and in fact it was a BAA race (10k, didn't check a bag at the half) and they provided opaque plastic bags and they let me put my carrier bag right inside without looking in it.

But op, iphones are tiny, just get an armband in the future just in case you have this situation come up.

Just leave it in the car. It will be nice for you to be detached for a couple hours.

Personally, I would never leave my phone anywhere.

Therefore, either, do not take it to the race in the first place, or, wear it in an armband.

    Just not worth the risk.

In the end I just put it in the unattended bag area and picked it up at the end. Worked out fine. Thanks for all the tips!
