MERRY CHRISTMAS!

The Twelve Days of Christmas conjures the lilting 12 verse song of the same name, no doubt. In modern society, with the emphasis on buying gifts before the 25th of December, the season of Advent has usurped ‘Christmas’ for some, so that the season of Christmas ends the day after Christmas.

In fact, December 25th is the First Day of Christmas. Twelve days were assigned by the church leaders many centuries ago to cover the learning about the season, which culminates on Twelfth Night (that may conjure up a Shakespearean play), the eve before January 6th or Epiphany—the day when the the ‘aha’ moment of what-the-season-really-means hits, and we celebrate the Magi’s visitation of the Christ child, who becomes elevated into the kingly level of competition for Herod.

The song has often been referred to as a mnemonic device to teach catechism to Catholic children, even though no evidence supports this, other than an amazing similarity of the daily gifts relating to key issues of the Scriptures. Even if the song lacks the historical truth of being a catechism for kids, its catechetical usefulness for teaching remains obvious. Hence, these twelve days will not only focus on the Lectionary, but also the aspects of each day’s ‘meanings.’

All Scriptures printed below are in King James Version for copyright purposes. However, clicking on the verse locations will take you to Biblegateway.com where the text is linked to more contemporary versions.

On the first day of Christmas, my true love gave to me: a partridge in a pear tree.
The partridge symbolizes Christ and the tree symbolizes the cross.

Matthew 1:16
And Jacob begat Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ.
Galatians 6:14
But God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world.

Prayer: Almighty God, Open my eyes that I might see. Open my mind that I might understand. Open my heart that I might make your words a part of me. May the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart be acceptable in your sight. Amen

Single Bible Study chapter to study

John 1:1-14
King James Version (KJV)

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

2 The same was in the beginning with God.
3 All things were made by him; and without him was not anything made that was made.

4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men.
5 And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.

6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.

7 The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe.
8 He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light.
9 That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.

10 He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not.
11 He came unto his own, and his own received him not.
12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:

13 Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.
14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

Prayer of Encouragement

Dear God, Thank you for being the Word and the light that can give us direction in the way we should go. Empower us to find the quiet time to listen and be open to the warmth of your love and wisdom. In Jesus name, In Jesus name, Amen.

Today begins the first day of Christmas and Jesus would be starting on his new journey with attentive parents Mary and Joseph striving to train him as he should be. A heavy load on small shoulders.

Mary continues to inspire me as one chosen to take on the amazing job of parenting God’s son. As any parent has felt that s/he wasn’t doing the best job of it, I wonder if Mary and Joseph felt the same some days. How might they have dealt with those feelings of being overwhelmed?

For those who are following the First day of Christmas verses and information, I ask you the question: What would you give your love on the first day of Christmas?
