Advent day 23 readings in the daily Lectionary (RCL) reveals the words of Mary, the humble teenager, who was about to become the mother of the Son of God. The passage is known as The Magnificat, because she magnifies the Lord, not herself. The Old Testament lesson in Samuel highlights the relationship of King David with God and the promise to make a great nation, to build a house forever, of the people of Israel. The New Testament epistle in Galatians ties that together to expand the faithfulness of Abraham to all, who are faithful, making the adopted family equal with the original chosen people of God. In the coming of Jesus, the faithful are united into a great nation and people of God—be they Jew or heathen. When we put our faith in God, we become a part of the family of God.

Prayer: Almighty God, Open my eyes that I might see. Open my mind that I might understand. Open my heart that I might make your words a part of me. May the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart be acceptable in your sight. Amen

Luke 1:46-55 King James Version (KJV) The Magnificat
46 And Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord,
47 And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.
48 For he hath regarded the low estate of his handmaiden: for, behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.
49 For he that is mighty hath done to me great things; and holy is his name.
50 And his mercy is on them that fear him from generation to generation.
51 He hath shewed strength with his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.
52 He hath put down the mighty from their seats, and exalted them of low degree.
53 He hath filled the hungry with good things; and the rich he hath sent empty away.
54 He hath helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy;
55 As he spake to our fathers, to Abraham, and to his seed for ever.

Prayer of Encouragement
Dear God, thank you for the beautiful song of the humble girl, Mary, as she magnified your name and what you would do. You would transform the world—raising up the low and bringing down those of high estate. You showed love and mercy and gave us examples to follow. Help us to be like Mary and magnify your name. Help us to encourage others around us to be more like you. In Jesus name, Amen.
Advent day 23 celebrates Mary, the mother of the Son of God, and the song she sang called, The Magnificat, because she magnifies the Lord, not herself. The entire series of Scripture lessons deal with relationships from the faithful to the Lord of Creation—the Holy One, Who does great things and elevates the lowly and is merciful to the needy, giving food to the hungry. We are given plenty of examples how the best life is lived.
We have only to go out and do it. When we become the faithful, we are given entrance into the family of God and we receive the blessings of the inheritance. Go in peace to Love and Serve the Lord.

As I have read the verses of Mary's song, and searched the internet for paintings and sculptures of what artist's envision her to be, rarely do any of them show a truly young girl.
But girls in their teens became mothers back then. It is likely that Mary was in her early to mid teens when she was betrothed to Joseph and then, this most amazing thing happens.
An angel visits her to tell her that she--a very young teenage Jewish girl--has been picked of all women throughout all of history to be the mother of the Son of God. How awesome is that! Her response is to praise God, which is today's lesson. Humble and able to sing. To say words that are recorded for history as turning things upside down.
Our loving Creator cannot be put into a box of our liking. God brings down the proud. Raises up the lowly. Exalts those, such as Mary.
I can't imagine any teenagers today qualifying for such an honor.0 -
Todays teaching beings me tears. A young teen blessed with bring the mother vof Jesus. What an honor. Than as i think of her at such a young age standing and watching her son suffer on the cross to die for the sins of mankind. God does have a plan for all of us. Mary sang beautiful praises to God. To whom God gives a task he also gives wisdom and strength for the journey. Thank God for his son and Mary a wise young lady whom he chose as an earthly vessel. Merry Christmas. May we take time to remember the reason for Christ mas.0
