My name is Nikoah. I am presently living in China. I grew up in small town Texas. My husband is teaching at a University here in China. While I work as a full time mom. I enjoy living overseas, but sometimes get frustrated not knowing exactly what I am eating. For example I found out today that after America, and Canada, China is leading in GMO products. Top 4 on their list: cotton, pappya, tomatoes, and sweet peppers. This really upsets me because I eat a lot of tomatoes, and there is no way of knowing which are GMO, and which are not. They do not have an "organic" section here. Well that about sums up who I am.

Hey, great idea for a group!
I'm an expat (of course) from New England currently making my home in South Korea.
I second your troubles with shopping for food. Even reading some Korean does not help me much here!

Hey all,
I just joined MFP, so I'm pretty new at this. I've been living in Chile for 6 months, and I'm loving it! But I put on over 15 pounds just since I've been here. I'm from California, and never noticed that my community was largely vegetarian, vegan, raw, organic, gluten-free, etc., and in a weird way, growing up there didn't leave me well-equipped to make some health choices. Health was just the default.
Other than that, it's relatively easy to get quality ingredients here. Some labeling practices are better here in than in the US, in my opinion. You can't tell what has GMO's, but it's a politically active culture and people are making a big deal out of it with protests and campaigns and what not. My biggest problem is the cultural food: it's EXTREMELY carb and sugar heavy. Healthy Chileans seem to stay that way by barely eating, but I miss being able to pile food onto my plate! It's not uncommon to go to a dinner where everything is bread, fried, red meat, or covered in mayo.
So, that's where I'm at! Hopefully more people will flock to this group, I'd love to hear more experiences.0 -
I'm a 'third culture kid' (TCK); was raised in Asia and have been living in the UK for the past couple of years now. Guess I've an inverted experience to everyone else here so far! :P
@cestabbey - Have you been to Insadong market in Seoul recently? If you go to the far end of the stretch (near the Baskin Robbins place - if its even still there, has been a while since I was there and am not sure if you're in Seoul or not), theres usually a few stalls where people have grown their own vegetables and such and have stalls set up around there. Hope that helps!0 -
@embaudin -- Yes, Insadong is great! Thanks for the tip. One of the great things about Korea is that those fresh veggies are in abundance. There are little old ladies sitting on the tiles in the underground metro stops selling vegetables, which is something I'm not used to in the States, haha.
We should resurrect this group!0 -

I'm in a similar weight boat as you, currently 5'5.5" 147 lbs. and aiming for 125-135 (I haven't been down there since early high school and I'm 23 now, so I'm not sure yet where in that weight range I will feel healthiest.)0 -
@cestabbey - Resurrection seems to be an ongoing difficult task! I guess not many expats have figured out that there are a fair few of us on here! :P How goes the battle with the language out there?0
-
@embaudin -- Language hasn't been too big an issue living here, and though I've dabbled with learning a bit, I haven't made any grand efforts! My boyfriend's Korean and he tries to infuse each day with new words, so I suppose I'm picking it up that way, haha. I study French two hours a day, which leaves little room for Korean. I have one more year in Korea, then it's (hopefully!) off to France for me! But these plans may change.0

@cestabbey - Ooooo France? I was hoping to travel to there a fair bit next year! You'll have to keep me posted on your travels! Maybe we can meet up and show France how true expats enjoy a new country! Haha0

Definitely! I wish there was an alert on my computer when someone posts in this group because I'm always missing them, lol.
I'm hoping to make France my "homebase" for as long as possible. Preferably for life, haha. It'll be hard but I have a "France-or-bust" mentality!
How's your loss going so far?0
