loosing weight while training for a marathon

Is it possible to lose weight training for a marathon? I know that sounds like a silly question..but most people I know (including myself) gained weight training. I have just started my training for a half in May, which my goal is to PR, but am considering signing up for full in late June. This would be my second full and honestly I am hoping to just run it for fun this time (not stress about the time)..BUT my main goal right now is to lose weight, I need to be beach ready by July.

Here's an interesting article from Runners World about runners gaining weight (same principles apply)

    http://www.runnersworld.com/weight-loss/why-do-runners-gain-weight

Personally I've found that I usually put a couple of pounds back on as my training volume ramps up. Some of that may be water as I'm likely storing more glycogen and some of it may be fat as I tend to not eat at a deficit with a race approaching (those long runs need fuel)

I suspect that if you were really diligent about your caloric intake and made sure that your deficit wasn't big enough to hurt your training you could shed a few pounds while training (especially this far out from the race)

Yes, you can lose weight training for a marathon. I did it. And even now with 300 mile months, I am struggling to maintain my weight.

Well, sammyneb..... quite frankly, that's what I'm doing here on MFP.

I took up ultrarunning a few years ago, and just kept steadily putting on the pounds. I really need to figure out how to NOT gain weight while training for an ultra. Or at least, I need to figure out how to take it off. It's not much weight. It worked out to about 4 lbs per year, or, 33 measly extra calories per day. But I can't keep doing that every year!

You bet it is... I lost >20 lb over 4 months training for my last full. Just eat less than you burn and you'll do it, too! For what it's worth, I prefer to use the TDEE method so that I eat generally the same amount every day... I just found it easier than gorging on long run days (when I'm rarely hungry) and eating way less on my rest day.

    Best of luck!

I joined myfitnesspal to make sure I didn't lose weight while I increased my running and cycling distances. I lost 15 pounds (from 130 to 115 pounds) when I trained for my first marathon... I just couldn't eat enough. This time as I'm training for my upcoming marathon, my starting weight is 115 pounds, and I really don't want to lose any weight at all.
