Fnding the Satellte for your GPS

I used to wait 2 or 3 minutes for my Garmin to find the satellite for a run. Now I lay the thing on a fencepost while I warm up and it picks up the satellite in less than 30 seconds.

Apparently the movement on my wrist delayed the process.

That's interesting! I usually start my watch up when I am doing a quick walk to warm up before I run. Maybe I will leave it on the stair railing on my porch before I start my walk.

I've noticed it depends on where I am running. It takes a while at one particular location. I thought it was a fluke until it happened the next time...

sometimes i find it right away, but when I am in different parts of the city like with lots of buildings it takes forever to find or if it is really cloudy.
Then there is me with my arm up walking around. lol

I had issues with finding satellites until I got the new 910xt. It will find satellites inside while I am getting my shoes on so when I walk out the door it's ready to go!

The newer model Garmins have a feature that *knows* where the satellites will be for the next 7 days. This is supposed to make sync much faster (apparently it works).

I'm always freezing my *kitten* in my driveway looking like a crazy underdressed lady staring at her wrist for 5 minutes..

I'll try this on my next run; put it outside then get dress inside. I'm stupid to never have thought about it before LOL

My watch takes a few minutes to find the satellite whether I'm moving or not. I try to just have it start searching when I'm staring my warmup walk and by the time I'm ready to start running, it's locked in and I then start the timer/tracking and start my run.

Just be careful where you do this. A friend of mine put her brand-new Garmin on the railing outside the YMCA and when she came outside 2 minutes later it was gone.

I sit my on the window sill for a few minutes, as I getting ready to go. My 310xt picks them (it's more than one satellite) up much faster than my 210,

I prop mine up on the window sill in the living room while I finish dressing.

It's not so much the tracking satellites that kills me, but rather the annoying sync cord/plug process after the run. I have a 210 with the annoying 4-pin clippy thing that never works on the first try. Or second. Maybe I should leave mine on the steps of Dave's YMCA so I can get a new one :)

yeah, that 210 set-up isn't great...the wireless is so much better.

I'm always running from home.. Small residential street, no worries! But I'm liking Doug's idea for a new one ;)

I've been using a 620 for a while now and the new model does find satellites very quickly. With my 305 and 610, I would put watch on an east facing window and it would usually synch by the time I headed out the door. With the 620, it locks in a few seconds.

I bought the Garmin FR220 a few weeks back and it usually picks up the satellites within 10-20 seconds after I unlock it. This is my first experience with a GPS watch though so I cannot compare it to others.

The wireless (ANT+) is pretty awesome. I throw my garmin on my desk after a run and by the time I have changed it's all uploaded.
