Low GI diet

So I am not for trendy diet fads or anything like that, but I have been looking into switching my diet over to a low gi diet. It seems to be the most natural diet as far as lifestyle changes go. Does anyone have any experience with this style of diet?

I had a friend, who is on this site, that used the GI diet a few years ago. I believe she had some success with it as well. It's been a few years since then so that is about all I know right now. I have a book on it floating around somewhere.

    What is a GI diet?

A GI diet focuses on eating foods that have a low glycemic index as they have the lowest impact on blood sugar and blood sugar plays a role in how much weight you are able to lose at one time. Those that are insulin resistant have a harder time losing weight because their blood sugar doesn't dip down often enough to allow the body to kick into fat burning mode. You have to go through your carbs before your body goes into the fat storage. By eating a GI diet the body, in theory, turns over more quickly to burning fat as the carbs in the blood have been depleted.

    Ah, thanks Etherlilly,

So since I try to avoid highly processed carbs (because of my addiction), it sounds like I may be doing this automatically?

Paula: Possibly. It also limits fruits as some are high on the glycemic index. Some unrefined carbs can test high on the index as well. I don't remember much more about it. The food choices are similar to what you would find on a low-carb diet.

I believe thats what the South Beach diet is about. I tried it once and lost 40pounds in six months, but I started missing my carbs and really didn't learn much about how to eat, so I gained all the weight back.

Thanks for all the info everyone! I am not going hard core no carbs or anything, just trying to cut out high processed foods like white bread and white sugar, and replace them with whole wheat products and more fruits and veggies. I thought if I just cut my calories I could still eat crap and lose weight, but I am finding out that if I eat more fruits and veggies and less processed foods I am steadily loosing weight! And I feel a lot better eating a more natural diet
  • I'm about to find out how hard this is, my doctor just put me on a similar plan for my diabetes, I do get carbs though thankfully, I just have to pick which ones I want, if I want a fruit that counts as my carb/starch/sugar or I can have 1 potato or 1/2 cup a rice and only at meals never at snacks!

It is not healthy to cut all carbs but there is a lot of research being done in the new diabetec craze and how it and obesity are hand in hand partners... I have a lot to learn
