PG Weight Gain Goals?

Just curious what your doc gave you for a weight gain goal, and what you are mentally aiming for?

1st PG starting weight 196, gained 30-35.
2nd PG starting weight 220, gained 30-35
3rd PG (this time) starting weight 186, so far (At 16 weeks) gained 14 :(

My doc said based on my BMI (I'm 5'9") I should only gain 15-20lbs, but in my own head I'm already better off than the first two times so have given myself permission to gain 25-30. I would love to keep it under 30 - which means I really need to get my act together for the last 24 weeks!

My goal is to still have a number on my ticker when I deliver, which should occur some time in the next 3-5 weeks.

My doctors/midwives really don't give any recommendations.
  • My original goal was 25 but I'm settling for anything under 30 :) I'm almost 34 weeks and have gained 24 pounds, but I'm consistently gaining 1.5-2 pounds a weeks right now which is upsetting. I'll be getting induced around 38 weeks so I'm hoping 30 pounds will be the max. First pregnancy I gained just shy of 40 pounds

In England they don't recommend any particular weight gain at all, and the only time you're weighed is at the booking appointment and when you have the combined test after the 12 week scan. I suppose they might be more concerned if you have a high or low BMI at the booking appointment.

I haven't weighed myself in any of my pregnancies. I don't want to be stressed and upset by weight gain when I know I'm exercising and generally eating really healthily.

I lost all the weight after both my previous kids. In fact, I started off this pregnancy about a stone (14lbs) smaller than I started my first pregnancy in 2008.

My doctor didn't give me a goal, which kind of bummed me out. I do very well with a "written goal" or hearing one come from my dcotor. I have no idea what would be "healthy" for me. I did start out a bit overweight for my height, so i'm trying to stay right at 25 lbs. I'm 20+2 today and i've gained 6.6lbs. I'm hoping though some of the this weeks gain came from super bowl snacks and it will drop a little next week. I really only want to gain .5 to 1lb a week.. both of the gains i've had were over 3lbs and that scares me.

I gained 45lbs with my daughter. Lost all but 10lbs of it. This one I am trying to stay under 40. My body just likes to gain weight with pregnancy I guess.

I'm not beating myself up about it. I plan on heading to the gym as soon as I'm cleared to exercise.

I started off about 15 lbs overweight. My OB said ideally I'd gain 20-25 max. But then he said I'd gain what I'd gain and just to make good choices and not to stress. At the end of my 2nd trimester I was a borderline fail on the gestational diabetes test so I started following the GD plan and only gained a couple lbs during the duration of the pregnancy. Ultimately, I gained 23 and lost it all (plus some) less than 2 weeks after my baby was born. If you're really concerned about weight gain, you might want to consider following a GD plan. It's really quite simple and most women I know gain minimal weight on it.

Just make good choices! Exercise when you can, even a 10 minute walk a couple times a day makes a huge difference. Personally, I think being active throughout pregnancy is what made my recovery (from an unplanned C-section) so quick a easy! Fitness & health is so much more than the number on the scale!

    5'2"/5'3"

1st pregnancy (2.5 years ago) I started 157 and went to 180 (gained 23 lbs) was told to gain 15-20
2nd pregnancy (13 months ago) I started 147 and went to 193 (gained 46 lbs! Eeep!) was told to gain 25-35
    3rd pregnancy - current I started 135 and at 25 weeks I am 149 (14 lbs) was told to gain 20-35

I was hoping to gain only around 20-25 lbs, now I'm just hoping to stay under 30. I seem to gain 1-1.5 lbs a week right now, but I'll gain it in a day then maintain it for a week, then jump up again. I wish I were gaining steadily instead of big jumps.

I can't agree with this enough. My first I failed the GD test miserably. Followed the GD diet. Gained 23 lbs and lost it within 8 days of birth! I didn't have GD with my second and ate everything. Took me 8 months to lose the 46 lbs and 12 more. I was told my earlier GD test wasn't good, I will be retaking in the next few weeks and have been told to expect to fail. The good side is if I do it'll force me to eat the GD diet (which I should be doing anyway) and will help me keep weight gain under control.

I was told to gain 10-15 lbs. I'm am 30lbs overweight.

1st pregnancy - started 185. ended 250 (HOLY COW)! I lost 50lbs and stuck around 200 up until I got pregnant with this pregnancy.

2nd Pregnancy started 214. (I lost a few pounds the first trimester just eating healthier) so far 213. I've gained about 6-7 lbs so far. I really only hope to only gain at the most 10 more pounds and at the least 5 lbs.

My dr. didn't give any recommendations.
I started off at a healthy weight (124 lbs, and i am 5'2)
I hope the gain remains under 35 lbs.
I gained 55 lbs with my son and was already around 20 lbs heavier then.

my goal is 25 lbs. I gained 45lbs with each of my other pregnancies. My first, I wasn't being careful at all, started off around 150 and got to 196! I had tons of swelling and high blood pressure. Lost it all, plus another 15lbs within 2 years and kept it off. Started my second pregnancy at 138, thinking I was in better shape and exercising, etc, but I STILL gained 45lbs! Again, lost it all in a year and then some. But I gained weight back when my husband returned from a long deployment, so starting this pregnancy at 145lbs . (I'm 5'4) So I'm actually going to count calories this time and hope to gain slowly! (With my second pregnancy, I was eating healthy, but huge portions!)

My doctor didn't give me a goal. With my first I had gained 11 by 30wks and was diagnosed with GD so I started following the plan. I lost 9lbs in the next 3 weeks and maintained after that. When I delivered I was up 1lb from when I started and by two weeks PP I was down 15 from where I started.

This pregnancy I started 10lbs less than with my first. I lost a bit and then gained a bit, but I still have not gotten back to my starting weight yet (only a 1lb under) for this pregnancy. I am taking the 3-hour glucose test in two weeks (skipping the 1-hour). I'd rather just take one test. I'm not really sure what to expect. My A1C was on the higher end of normal at my 8wk blood work. I am 26wks so only about 14 to go. If I gain 1lb a week from here I would be happy with that. I've tested my sugar with my meter a few times and it has been fine, but my test strips expired in 2012 so I really can't go by that.

Does everyone get tested for GD in the US? We only get tested in England if our BMI is really high, or we have a family history of diabetes, or if they suspect you have it after testing your wee at a midwife appointment!

My dad has type 2 diabetes, so I had to have the test. We do a 2 hour one here. Fast for 12 hours, blood test, vile glucose drink, wait 2 hours, another blood test. My first was 4. Something and 2nd 5. Something. Over 8 is considered high, and under something like 3.5 is considered low.

I honestly don't understand how some people gain so little in pregnancy (unless they puke up loads) because baby, placenta, fluid, blood etc adds up to about 20-25lbs!

I think US medical care generally involves a lot more testing, and that can be good or bad, but I will say that nearly every woman I know has a family history of diabetes. Bleh.

I guess you have to pay for it! I suppose if the NHS charged us, they'd probably test us for everything going! My sister used to live in China and said they're more likely to do a c section there as they can charge more for it. Maybe that's the same in the US. I know lots more women have c secs in the US compared to the UK.

I think UK/US rates are too high, but part of the issue in the US is an unofficial ban on vaginal birth after c-section, especially in rural areas. I have to travel 50 miles to a hospital that will do it. As least gasoline is cheaper here!

Editing to add - it will be interesting to see if the Affordable Care Act changes C-section rates. It looks like they are starting to stabilize in the last few years. I guess the risk of multiple sections are starting to affect these types of decisions.

I think most hospitals here are happy to let women go for a VBAC, especially if their previous c-sec was for something like a breech baby and wasn't likely to happen again. A friend of mine was upset she couldn't go for a VBAC with her 2nd as she went too overdue and they won't induce as the stronger contractions could burst the scar. Had she not gone overdue then she could've gone for VBAC.

Most women I know have had vaginal births.

I was talking to my midwife and saying I didn't want a csec (baby is still breech although at 29 weeks she has plenty of time to turn) and my midwife was going on about delivering breech babies. Not sure I'd want to do that either....

Yeah, you're lucky with the cost of petrol (gas). It's soooo expensive here.
