Conventions!

Let's talk about our favorite conventions!
My first convention was Wizard World in New Orleans about 5 years ago. A bunch of the Buffy cast was there and I got to meet and take a photo with James Marsters (yum!).
In 2010 I attended my first PAX (Penny Arcade Expo) in Seattle, which is a huge gaming convention with a massive community. The following year I attended PAX East in Boston, and have been every year since. Last year I became an enforcer, which means I volunteer and help run the convention - I work in the PC room. My favorite things about PAX are the actually the events that occur outside of the convention - nerd-themed bar crawls, game parties, etc. It's a blast!
On the topic of conventions, what are your tricks to attending events like this and not killing your diet/exercise routine?

Oh my goodness I would so love to go to PAX one day!! I've never been to a real convention, though as a kid I went to a small Pokemon get-together type thing, haha. I barely remember anything about it. I was like 12.
This Summer my husband and I are going to A-Kon (anime convention) and I am SO PUMPED!! He's way more into anime than I am, but I love it too, so I think we're really gonna have a blast. One of our favorite voice actors (J. Michael Tatum) will be there so it'll be really cool to meet him!
I know my diet and exercise routine are gonna be absolutely wrecked that weekend, but it's just one weekend, and it's a huge event, so I think it'll be ok! I'm gonna work as hard as I can for the next 4 months so that I can be comfortable eating all the yummy con foods and just focus on having a good time! There will be a lot of walking involved too, so that will help a little. Then when we get back, it'll be back to my usual routine, with hopefully little to no lost progress! And if so, then well, I'll just have to say A-Kon was merely a setback!! Mwuahahaha!0 -

I hate you. -_-
I mean.. I don't -hate you- hate you, but.. I hate you.
How geeky is this: my bf and I know that if we were to ever get hitched (9 years together this spring, so we may start getting serious, but it's really too soon to say, we don't wanna rush anything), our honeymoon would be GenCon.
We run games at Con of the North in Mpls, and occasionally go to CONvergence. But eventually I'd love to take my niece to Sakuracon in Seattle. She loves anime, and I took her to Animinneapolis last summer.. and.. was completely lost. My anime is limited to Ranma 1/2 and Excel Saga, and while our costumes for the masquerade were awesome (she was Chihiro and I was Kaonashi from Spirited Away), she was fangirling out about whatever them kids are into these days. *wheeze*0 -
That sounds like a great honeymoon!! Me and my husband semi-joked about making Blizzcon our honeymoon, but Jamaica won out. I would've been way more interested in Blizzcon a few years back, anyway. Our interest in Blizzard games is waning a bit. It would probably still be a lot of fun, though!0

If Blizzcon didn't sell out within 10m of the ticket sales going live, we'd be tempted as well. But dayum.0

Aaah jealous!!! That one is in Texas, right? I went to A-Kon two years ago and it was really fun... The farthest I've traveled for a con yet
This year I'm going to Naka-Kon in Overland Park, KS and Planet Comicon in Kansas City. I also purchased tix for my friend and I for the Trektacular panel, where all the actors from Star Trek next gen will be there (sans Picard unfortunately, but William Shatner may make an appearance). I'm so pumped! Trekkies be jelly hehe0 -
Yep, in Dallas!! We live in Shreveport which is just 2 or 3 hours east.
That Trek panel sounds like a dream come true!!! The Trek cast member I'd want to meet the most is Nimoy. I love him so much!! I don't know what I'd do if I actually met him, other than make a fool of myself, haha. The TNG cast is amazing, too, of course!! Do you know if Wil Wheaton will be there? I think he's more into the tabletop gaming scene nowadays but I'm sure he still does Trek stuff too.0 -
My husband and I do Dragon Con each year and we may take the kids to Momo Con in Atlanta. We will see. Dragon Con is my one time a year to let my Geek Flag Fly!!0

One of my good friends goes to Dragon Con every year with a big group of online friends and they always have a blast. I may have to join them this year, or maybe try get tickets for Blizzcon. I've never been to a big convention and I think it would be a riot.0 -

I'll be attending Naka-Kon and Planet Comicon as well! Though I'm not going to be doing the Trektacular panel (not a big enough Star Trek fan to fork over the extra money, haha), but I bet that will be a good time for the trekkies!0 -
The biggest one that i NEED to go to before i die is the San Diego Comic-Con! I just havent been able to score tickets! SAD! ((
But, last month my husband and I went to SacAnime 2014 - Anime convention in Sacramento, CA. The main reason why we went was because the creator of Power Rangers was there giving a presentation. It included never before scenes of the show, where some of the cast is now, original try-out videos of the original cast, etc. it was awesome! The actual Anime con wasnt as good as i was hoping for (probably because the convention was in sacramento. so boring here).
This year Jason David Frank (the gree/white ranger) will be in Sacramento next month for Wizard Con. My husband and I follow him on instagram and he's SOOOOO awesome. he actually takes the time to comment back to fans, checks out their pages; likes their photos and comments on them. He's sent me a few comments back. But, my husband (i love him!) screwed up though. He assumed I wasnt going to the VIP Jason is doing. But when he went to buy my VIP ticket... sold out. Needless to say, i was very disappointed. But, i still will get a photo-op with the Green Ranger.
I really hope to see Stan Lee and Bruce Campbell! I cant wait to buy a bunch of stuff!!! hahah0 -
I've always wanted to go to Dragon Con. I've been trying to convince my daughter that we should vacation out west this year.0
-
I go to Anime weekend Atlanta when ever i can. that is where i met my now soon to be husband.0
-
We're going to Anime Boston in March. I can't wait!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!0
-
Oh, and Boston CominCon in August! :happy:0
-
I'm loving all these tales of awesome adventures at cons!! I really can't wait to go to A-Kon!!!
That's so cool that you met your husband at a con, Animebride! Meeting people in super geeky spaces is the best! I met my husband in WoW, haha.
I've heard good things about Anime Boston, Cookie. I bet it'll be a blast!!0 -
My first convention was last year's Animinneapolis in Minnesota. This year I'm taking hubby to his first con and we're checking out Anime Detour. I can't wait. I'll get to meet Greg Ayres again (hubby just LOVES him)...
Last year I took my Haruhi Suzumiya and Yuki Nakamura cosplays and I'll take them again this year. I had thought I'd have another for this year's con but I'm thinking I'll just leave it as is and hope there's some cute Lolita clothing there to purchase for one of the days as well. Since I'm getting closer to my goal weight (at may make it there by April) I will love awarding myself with some clothing at the con.
As for staying on track, the hotel has a fitness room but I doubt I'll be using it since events start at like 8am and the raves go til like 2 am so I won't be doing much else besides panels and walking and dancing. As far as food, I'm just going to track but not beat myself up if I go over. It's a weekend, not forever.0 -
I haven't been to a Con in years but all of mine have been east coast anime cons. Otakon, Katsucon.... which is actually this weekend... huh.. Maybe I should go.. I have the money.. time.. No one to go with but that is no big deal. I'll have to think about that.0
-
I went to NY Comic Con this year and it was just... overwhelming. YIKES. Too many people!!! Although the cosplay was fantastic, and I had an in-depth conversation with Billy West.
I actually have a table at a few upcoming conventions; I make comics and I'm going to be trying to sell my comic to the unsuspecting public. Let's see how well that goes with my social anxiety!!! HAHAAH!!
But I'd love to go to SDCC. Seriously, they have the best rosters of special guests ever to assemble.0 -
Billy West is the bomb!!! Good luck selling your stuff at the con! That's so exciting!!0

My first con was the Emerald City Comic Con in Seattle almost... 5 years ago? It was much smaller then but still a good intro and a total blast. That same summer me and my bestie went to San Diego, which was insane but so much fun!
Every year since I've been going with my geek girls to the Emerald City Comic Con, and I've been getting better at managing my health goals. The first three years at my highest weight and lowest fitness level were fairly well torture on my back and feet. It was a total shock last year to realize that I was able to walk all day everywhere with only a couple short breaks. Being able to focus on geekery vs. your throbbing swollen feet = WIN in my book.
Walking all day for 3 days is my exercise, and managing meals and snacks is pretty easy considering we all try to save money where we can (so we can buy all the things!). Usually we'll stop at a grocery store before we go to our hotel and load up on portable healthy snacks (ie. veggies that we can cut into sticks, eggs that we can hardboil in a kettle, instant oatmeal packets, make our own homemade trail mix etc).
For most breakfasts/lunches & snacks we use what we bought (with the odd exception) and then we go out to dinner at our fave restaurants. It's been easier to make non-scale-breaking choices when we go out to eat now that I've got more knowledge and experience under my belt, but because everyone does the same thing it's not something I have to think about much and I can just focus on geeking out with mah gals instead0 -
That's so awesome that you're able to fully experience the con now due to your improved fitness!! Definitely a good motivator! Those are all good snack ideas, too. I'll have to remember those come June! Saving money is definitely a big part of the reason I want to pack our own food. There's sure to be a ton of awesome stuff we're gonna want to buy, and it won't be cheap!0

Yeah it's a balancing act but I think it's one we get a bit better at every year. Our hotel is always at least a handful of huge downtown Seattles blocks away so it's an extra 15-20 mins to and from. And we still get some amazing food but because it's only for dinner we don't break the bank or the scale. Also quick and easy sandwiches are another option for packables, we just try to work around limited cooking sources.
Bringing our own herbal teas is also nice as we've all got steel thermos'. So on the chilly morning walks to the con it's great0 -
We'll be staying in the hotel the con is at, so I'm not sure how much we're gonna want to leave. I know the area pretty well, but unfortunately there's not a lot of good options around there, haha. I was thinking sandwich fixings, maybe some fruit, crackers, granola bars, that sort of stuff. I need to check if we have a fridge in our room or if we'll have to rely fully on our cooler.0
-
We're staying at the hotel the con is at as well, but I plan on keeping my pedometer on me to see how much walking I'm doing. It's a big place so I'm sure it's a lot of walking. There's a BK, DQ and Chili's restaurant around the hotel and then inside the hotel they have a couple eateries.. I don't think I'm going to be packing anything special food-wise. I'm going to go with the flow and eat when I get a chance. I plan to be at a lot of panels so eating will be the last thing on my mind. If I go over on calories that weekend I'm not going to get upset.0
-
Eating is definitely hard to do right at cons! I'm lucky that I'm in the KC area for the two I'm attending next month, so I'll driving to them from my house each day (that equals breakfast and dinners at home, so only lunch will have to be done around the con itself). When I went to San Diego Comicon in 2012 though.. man... I ate terribly.. I'm pretty sure I gained a real 2 pounds while there, but I also didn't count my calories or take accountability back then.0
-
Pack some good snacks. I sometimes found myself snacking in line because we had to be there 2 hours before. That kept me from binging later. Usually we do chocolate covered raising, cheese and crackers, etc. I really don't track what I eat at a con because it is my weekend to splurge on everything food and otherwise.0

I love NYCC! They also have NY Anime Fest at the same con. I remember going when they were both separate cons. My geeky boyfriend is also overwhelmed by the crowds, but it helps to have a plan, and take things in short bursts.0 -
I only really go to local cons right now. Anime Nebraskon, Anime Iowa, and I used to go to OSFest. I really want to go to Katsucon and Dragon Con.0
-
My first con EVER was Dragoncon in 08, I think. Kind of a mistake to go to that epic of a con first time out - all other cons pale in comparison. That being said, I adore going to cons, large or small.
New York Comic Con/Anime Fest
AnimeNext
WickedFaire
RenFaire (not really a con, but still)
I'm in the NYC-metro area, and there a bunch of Who, Fantasy etc cons I've not made it to yet!0
