Exhausted!

I am 3 weeks post surgery now and over the past 2-3 days my energy level is really decreasing. I am getting 700-800 calories, 80+ grams protein, 50-60 carbs and 64+ oz. of fluids in every day. I had been walking and even did first day of c25k (I have done program before) but found I am not ready for running yet. I know my body underwent major surgery and anesthesia and recovery will not happen overnight but I was feeling pretty good and now I'm not. Also, I have had right sided pain on and off since I came home. I thought this would subside but it remains unchanged. My stomach was removed from one of the incisions on that side and I had my drain on that side, which was removed a few days early because it was so painful. I don't have a gallbladder so I know that's not it. I see my surgeon for my 1 month check next Thursday. I want to go back to work (OR nurse) and get on with my life! Sorry for the rant :)

Are you sleeping enough? Week 3 was my first week back to work and I was very tired returning to life. Week 3 also seems quick to start any intensive workout plans. I walked from day 1 and started light workouts in the gym (everything except core/abs) at week 4. Your intake seems real good at this point - are you tracking food and exercise on MFP? That would help you see your dailt calorie deficit.

If you have a very high energy burn you will be tired as your body will be breaking down extra fat (good thing) for energy.
  • Week 3 was very hard for me too. I didn't start getting energy back until week 4 but I was still pretty worn out. Are you taking your vitamins? Even with enough calories and protein your body still isn't getting all the nutrients it needs so vitamins are important. Also, keep in mind that your body stores toxins in fat and as your body breaks down fat those toxins are released into your system and absorbed into your bloodstream. This can make you feel not only exhausted, but almost like you have the flu,

As for the pain, I had the pain for two solid weeks. It was getting better by week 3 but not completely gone. I would definitely call your doctor or surgical nurse and not wait for your follow up to discuss it with them.

I was really seriously, depressingly exhausted up until wk 6. My MFP friends really kept me going :) I just prayed a lot to accept the process. Think about it, everyday you are at a 400 calorie (based on normal 1200 cal diet) deficit forcing your body to burn fat for energy. And let's face it, many of us were eating up to 4000 calories a day prior to surgery to maintain our obesity. We all know the exhaustion of dieting, this is it x4. It takes 90-120 days to change out all your blood hemoglobin that had been exposed to your old higher blood sugar levels. Once hemoglobin is altered it can't change back. You have to wait til the blood is recycled into new cells. This is why diabetics are so tired when you first treat them with meds but 3 months later they are fine. I still get fatigued but every day gets better.
  • I am over most of the tiredness, but when I saw my GP last week (5 weeks out) he had lab work done and found I was low on Vitamin D. He prescribed a pretty high dose, once weekly for 12 weeks and then said "This will give you some energy." I had not really complained of low energy, but.....are you having labs done at your 1 month check? Could you have a specific vitamin deficiency?

Hope it gets better for you!

What vitamins are you all taking?

I have not had my sleeve as yet (end of march) - but trying to prepare my home for the post op period.

Have bought my protein shakes, my majic bullet (trying different protein shakes) and accumulating things I would need.

Have not heard anything really about post op vitamins (of which we would be using forever - right?).

I just use Centrum chewable multivitamins and Caltrate chewable calcium. There are tons of options though. I am curious too what other people take?

I take Flintstone chewable complete with iron twice a day, so with that I get 1200 iu of vit. D, 36 mg of iron and 200-300 % of RDA on most everything else. I haven't tried larger swallow pills to know if I could take a regular vitamin. I also take Prilosec, Biotin 5000 mcg and my Vasotec for bp has already been decreased, I may get to go off it completely :)

Blood Pressure Meds!! My Dr. allowed me to come off of them completely in week threes (had forgotten that) which definately helped perk me up. Vitamins: In the first few weeks I took GNC Adult Gummies for a Daily Multi and Daily C plus Biotin 2500.

Now I take a daily GNC MegaMen, bio C plus, CoQ10 and Biotin.

I was back to work on week three and having to get up early and be dressed and out was hard that first week. But it got better quickly. I also found out at my 3 month that I needed more vitamin D, so if you have labs coming up that might help.

Vitamins for after? The only thing added was the vitamin D and an increase in calcium citrate. Other than that I take what I always did: Omoprozel for my acid reflux, multi vitamin, potassium (for leg and foot cramps), asprin, and glucosimine/condroiten (for arthritis). My blood pressure meds were cut in half at 3 months and discontinued at 6 months out.
