Calorie Counting on Insanity

Hi everyone! I am finishing week three of Insanity and it has been...insane ha! I am so confused on the whole calorie counting thing with this program. The Elite Nutrition says I should be eating 1740 calories a day and I am used to eating about 1300. What is the deal? Is it normal to up my calorie intake?! I am 27, 5'7" and weigh about 142. I want to lose weight but it seems like a lot to eat to lose weight!

Hi! Check out Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE) calculation in MFP forums or Google TDEE. Understanding TDEE helped me learn a lot about calorie counting. For the first three weeks of Insanity (I'm finishing up week 5 this Saturday), I was eating ~1200-1300/day. I've since upped my calorie intake to 1600/day, the extra calories coming from protein. I know it seems like a lot, but all the more reason to add 2 tbsp of peanut butter (or whatever protein/good fat you enjoy) to your day!
  • Thank you!! Yeah it does seem like a lot but I am always hungry. It is kind of nice to eat more food--even if it is all "clean". Any reason to eat more peanut butter makes me happy! Have you seen some good results so far with Insanity?
  • Thanks for the TDEE recommendation! IIFYM is an interesting concept.

Yes, great results! This is my second attempt to finish Insanity. I started it about a year ago, but only made it through week 7 because I was having trouble fitting it in with my school schedule. I'm finishing week 5 (recovery week) tomorrow and I am determined to finish this time! I did see results the first time through--more inches lost than pounds--but I wasn't counting calories and paying attention to macronutrients. This time, however, I've been diligently counting calories and really trying to each more protein and fiber. (I pretty much add a scoop of black beans or blueberries to every meal.) I've lost about 7 pounds so far. Also something I've done differently this time that has helped TREMENDOUSLY is "switching up" my workouts. I replace 1-2 Insanity workouts per week with another activity, my favorites being Jillian Michael's DVDs, Crunch Pilates DVDs, weight lifting, yoga, or brisk walking. For me, it's about staving off boredom!
