Dilemma Time

Okay, I've got a hardware purchase problem.

I'm currently running a Shimano Ultegra 6750 (dark grey) chainset - that's the 50/34 110bcd compact version - with a Stages Cycling powermeter (for those who don't know, the stages basically replaces the non-drive side crank with a modified 6750 crankarm with the powermetering bits bonded to it).

Now, the 6750 is still in pretty good condition, considering it's been on 3 different bikes (the Planet-X, then the Dolan and currently the CaadX), but it's only a matter of time before it needs new chainrings. Of course, the 6750 has been superseded by the new 11-speed 6800 which uses a 4 bolt system, so the supply of chainrings for the 6750 is likely to dry up (at least at discounted prices) - currently it's around £90 for a pair of rings from CRC, with a complete 6750 coming in at £130 - now £40 for an entire spare set sounds worthwhile - especially bearing in mind I'm sort of "bought into" the 6700 series Hollowtech II with the powermeter. As soon as the existing supply of the 10 speed kit drys up at the shops though, just the chainrings direct from Madison would be full list price, i.e. more expensive than I could currently buy a 6750 for!

I'm informed by Stages that actually the 6700 series powermeter crank will work perfectly well with the 6800 series, though its not an exact cosmetic match. It would however allow me to be running current hardware, give me the option to perhaps swap to 11 speed at some point, and, maybe allow me to go for a 52/36 "sprinters compact" setup, which i'm slightly tempted by, especially if i'm thinking of riding a couple of TT's this year... Also, in fairness, the Dolan was really optimised for a full-size chainset, rather than the compact - the front mech hanger which is bonded to the frame is right at the bottom of it's adjustment on a 50T ring.

Of course, I could just stop being such an "equipment tart" and worrying that the chainrings don't match the cranks, and go buy some aftermarket rings... I suppose if I bought some Rotor Q-RIngs, I could always say that it was a performance-motivated decision

    Sorry mate,

I can't get past the mantra that I intend to ride by this summer...

If you can't be good... look good.

Personally, if something didn't look right on the bike, I would start to fall out with it quite quickly.

I can't really help with the technical stuff... sorry.
