I just want to introduce myself. My name is Kaye and I had the gastric sleeve 12/30/2013. I am doing good but for some reason I am starving to death all the time. I have a call into my dietitian hoping to find some answers. I started with my family doctor June 2012 and lost 35 pounds. Then I went to the weight loss center and lost 30 pounds before surgery and 22 pounds since surgery. I really want the numbers to go down but they are not moving down quick enough. Even though before surgery I was wearing a size 22/28 and now I am in a size 22. I am getting more active but my activity is limited because of extreme swelling in my legs. They have started in rehab to help my legs.
I was so happy to find this group. I am looking for friends that have had the sleeve and can give me encouragement along the way. I highly recommend the gastric sleeve to anybody considering weight loss surgery. Weight loss surgery is not the easy way out. This takes lots of self discipline and strength. Some of us just need that little something extra to help hold our feet to the fire until we can do it on our own.

Are you hitting your protein and water goals? Are you drinking with your meals?. Are you reaching the calorie goals set by your nutritionist? Have you stopped eating your Kryptonite foods? These are some of the top reasons for hunger after surgery.0

Is there anyway you would be able to do water aerobics. They are very low impact and do not hurt your joints. I also bought one piece of exercise equipment - an elliptical (low impact for feet and legs/joints) recumbent (seat with a back, very comfortable) with moveable arms. So you have three choices of workout: 1) just sitting and doing your legs (this allows you to watch TV or even read a book) - my absolute favorite and I notice I workout longer, 2) standing working both arms and legs; and sitting down, working both arms and legs at the same time. It's extremely comfortable and affordable. I live on Social Security Disability and was able to find a new one for around $350. Best money I ever spent. You do have to have someone put it together for you and it takes an hour or less, dependent upon abilities. Extremely low impact on legs, knees, feet.

I am hitting my protein level and getting my water in. They are slowly bringing back foods. This week it is chicken. My stomach can not handle it yet. Shredded chicken and turkey are ok but I need to give my stomach a little more time before trying the chicken again. The dietitian has not told me how many calories I need to be getting in. Just to keep track of protein and water and add back the foods that are suggested in our book from the weight loss cente.
Karen, I have done water aerobics when I go to rehabilitation. I also used use a recumbent bike. My husband has found me one at Wal Mart. I can use it when I am not able to go to rehab.

Not everyone has lost of appetite, like me! My close friend had the surgery 2+months before me and she did have lose of appetite I was so jealous, but you have to remember everyone is different, just follow your doctor and dietitian and make wise choices you should do fine. My stomach would not tolerate tuna for the longest time, I am thinking about trying it again. Also just a word of encouragement some movement is better than no movement, so do what you can, you will get stronger!

Thanks for your suggestions. I talked to my dietitian this morning. She said it was normal for my appetite to come back. Now I need to work past head hunger and get in my solid protein [like the chicken]. She said it is probably hurting because my stomach is use to the protein coming from a drink or Greek yogurt. I need to get in my solid protein. I had bought a lean turkey breast. I have cut me two ounces and I am taking my time and eating it slowly. So far no problems. I will admit this was easy before when I had no appetite but now the hard work is beginning.

Don't forget to chew thoroughly. When reintroducing proteins like chicken, pork then beef it is critical to chew. Softer proteins like fish are easier early on as are ground meats but you must really chew very thoroughly.
