Stronglifts at home or gym

Right now I weight train twice a week with a PT at a small club, with a DVD and/or 5k run in between to round out my week. It's not super convenient but was a good way to kick start my strength training as I was strictly a JM user until last fall.
I'm really interested in lifting heavy - the SL program looks like a good step for me. I think I'm ready to move on from the trainer and do this on my own now. But: I have nothing at home other than hand weights.
My question is - is setting up a home gym going to be crazy expensive? Should I instead bite the bullet and join the mega gym near my house? I would rather workout at home but again, I'm starting from nothing.
Thanks in advance. I can't wait to get going!!!

you don't need a ton of stuff, just a barbell, squat rack, bench and plates. You can probably get that 2nd hand for cheaper.
I work out at home for even less than this, using two bedside tables as a squat rack, however this is not ideal and I wouldnt recommended it, I intend to get a squat rack but financial and practical issues have been getting in the way of this. There's not much of a second hand market where I live and most of it it's all treadmills and machines.0 -
I do it at home.
My husband and son built me a squat rack for my birthday....it's rough but it works...for now. It will be modified this spring so I can bench with it.
I would check sites like kijiji or craigs list for now...I have bits and pieces from every where atm.
We discussed a gym membership but realized for that amount of money we could invest in a power rack and a new bench and just add weights and bars as needed.0 -
I train at home too. Bought my squat rack, bench, olympic bar and weights at a garage sale for $140.00. Amazing deal because I don't think they were ever used. I have a weight machine $45 (garage sale). My last purchase was a weight rack to hold the weights $20 from Kijiji. Also, sliding closet doors with mirrors are great for checking form. Got these from Habitat for Humanity.0

We did the first four weeks or so at the gym, but there's only one squat rack so my husband bought a power cage off of Craig's List. One day we were at the gym and a new guy was on the squat rack doing SL (or something, he was adding in all kinds of stuff) and when he got off, we dashed over only to be cut off by a buff girl we have dubbed Sarah Conner from Terminator. At that point, we were going to be late for work if we didn't so something so we came home and did it and we've been doing it at home ever since. Last week, he picked up another Olympic bar so that we can do rows and deads at the same time with different weight. It means a lot not to have to rush.0

I lift at home too. Bought Olympic barbell set and a flat bench and these stands http://www.amazon.com/Valor-Fitness-BD-9-Power-Squat/dp/B006CW02ZS/ref=sr_1_1?s=sporting-goods&ie=UTF8&qid=1394391919&sr=1-1
I don't like taking turns.0 -

I am set up at home and I love it.
It cost me about 600 to get all set up. 250 for a barbell and weights from Craigslist.
350 for a rack, bench, heavy duty mat, and weight tree (so that the plates aren't strewn around, since I have kids and lift in my dining room).
Totally worth every penny. Plus, if I don't feel like working out, it is staring me in the face all day and I end up doing it anyway!0 -

I decided to join the Y across the street instead. It is intimidating , and I am not sure if I can overcome that, but I just can not come up with that kind of money that needs for a home gym.0 -
I also lift at home.
Got everything on kijiji.
Not the greatest quality, but I figured I would just get started and keep looking for better upgrades later down the road.0
