Stupid paranoid marathon timing question

I am getting ready to enter the Pike's Peak Marathon and you are required to enter a qualifying time, down to the second.

The results page for the race I want to use gives the time to the tenth of a second: 3:42:44.6

Technically according to the USATF road races are timed to the nearest second, not nearest tenth, and the times should be rounded up, so I should enter 3:42:45.

But it *says* 3:42:44 on the web site, so conceivably if they check my result to confirm, they could claim I have given them inaccurate info. Which do you think I should enter?

In the end it shouldn't matter -- all I need is a 3:45:00 to qualify, but I'm getting paranoid because this race fills up fast.

I know, but their registration page is pretty intimidating:
    Qualification notes:
    - Races must be from the last 2 years (2012+) and races before 2012 won’t be accepted.
    - Races without online results won’t be accepted.
    - Race distances other than marathons won’t be accepted.
    - Splits from races including longer races and triathlons won’t be accepted.
    - Peak veterans of the last 2 years must use Peak results for qualifications.
    - You will need to provide your qualifying race name, year, your time, and a link to your results.
    - Personalized PP Ascent/Marathon results links can be generated here. Site also checks qualifications!
    - You are responsible for finding the results websites for other races.
    - If the qualifications you provide can’t be confirmed you will be removed from the race and forfeit your entry fee! You WON’T be moved to the 2nd Field!

Part of this is just me being stubborn. I could use another marathon time but I think it would be cool to use my Grandfather Mountain Marathon time as my Pike's Peak qualifier (GMM is a notoriously tough marathon, albeit not nearly as tough as Pike's Peak).

Yikes. Surprised they didn't ask for a urine, blood and stool sample.

If they do all that, then it sounds like they are freaking insane and do you really want to run a race put together by crazy people? Well, I mean crazier than they are to put together a marathon on Pikes Peak. I mean...never mind.

I think I'm going to go with rounding up. That is the official USATF rule, so if they question my time I can come back with that.

...and I'm in! I went with the rounded-up number. Hopefully it will go through without a hitch!

If they reject you for a rounding issue that would be over the top :flowerforyou:

I agree with this. Altho, one could say that anyone who runs a marathon is crazy, so I guess it's all perspective.

Heh. Actually this would be an issue for almost anyone -- there are two fields in the race, and they check everyone's time to make sure that no one is sandbagging to get into field 2 (for 3:45 to 5:30 marathoners). They do have a legitimate reason for this: they want to spread out the field. With 700 runners on the trail, if everyone was super fast they'd all be bunched up and it would be a frustrating race for everyone.

But...even if you rounded up to minutes, you'd still be under the time cut off.

I mean, I get the need to show some panache by adding the time of another bad-*kitten* marathon, but I think you're over thinking this.

I agree, but it was just too cool not to do. I doubt it will be a problem, that was just me being worried on registration day.

I'm on the official registration list, and it looks to me like if folks get pulled, they have an opportunity to correct the entry before they are formally withdrawn from the race.

Absolutely. It needed to be done. You wouldn't be the kind of guy who does races like this if you weren't the kind of person who doesn't understand that.

Good luck! My husband ran the marathon in 2011 and enjoyed it. I think it was his second favorite marathon, after Crater Lake. I liked that we got to go to Colorado :)

I ran Crater lake and it is my favorite too! If Pike's is second to that it will be awesome!

Thanks for posting the link - I am officially in and have a "yes" under the qualified portion! Whew!

Interesting -- my time has now been officially verified, but they changed it! It now reads 3:42:44. So I guess that's what I should have gone with, but either way I'm in, so NBD.
