How many calories and carbs are you eating daily?
My doctor doesn't give calorie or carb goals until you are one year out from surgery.

My doctor has never given me a calorie/carb goal. I'm 19 month post-op from my RNY. The only thing they gave me was that I should aim for about 8 oz per meal. However I exceed that as I'm going based on calories.
I average about 150 gm of carbs a day, of which about 50 of that is sugar - typically from fruit and a bit of refined sugar. I shoot for about 1900 calories a day, however I'm still trying to run a deficit to lose.
I'm a 195 lb 32 year old adult male with a sedentary lifestyle with the exception of the 5 hours a week I spend in the gym. I do about 2600 calories in exercise each week and I try not to eat my exercise calories. However, my results will be very different due to the nature of my RNY surgery. It's malabsorbative, so I don't absorb all the calories I eat.
The problem you are going to have is you are asking a very personal question. Each person's goal will be different based on body weight, height, goal, activity level, etc. Each person's results will vary greatly.
Personally, I think you would be better off setting a goal, then adjust based on your results. Maybe start with what MFP gives you, then adjust manually. Or head over to http://iifym.com/ and calculate your goals there.
Basically these are my priorities. Protein first, fat second, carbs third. I've read that your don't need to ingest carbs. Your body is able to manufacture those on it's own. You however cannot survive without eating protein.0 -
csmccord, thank you! Congratulations on your weight loss!!!!
Mfp gives me over 2000 calories a day. I think that is to much. My main focus is getting all my protein and water, but I do focus on keeping my calories low.0 -
I usually try to get my calories from 40%Protein-40%Carbs-20%Fat. MFP gives me a goal of 1600 but I'm really just aiming for 1200 cal with 120g protein, 120g carbs, 20-30g fat. If I feel like I'm in a stall I'll cut the carbs in 1/2 and add some more protein and fat for 3-4 days then go back to normal.0

My nut put me on 750 -850 cals a day, 60-70 protein, 100 carbs. This is my sedentary baseline, I can have more if I exercise. When I reach goal my sedentary baseline will be 1400 calories. I looked at my 90 day MFP report and I am averaging around 60 g of carbs per day. I no longer eat wheat, potato or rice. Those were my Kryptonite foods and full of empty calories. It is hard enough getting in the protein without going over. Since 11/20/2013 I have lost over 70 lbs. I can honestly say that 80% of my success is attributed to dropping wheat, potato and rice. Some people say how can I restrict myself and I point out that I only removed 3 items from my diet. There are many flours I now cook with-chickpea, buckwheat, sorgum, millet, Tef, spelt, chestnut, almond, quinoa, amaranth, coconut etc. And many beans- mung, aduki, pigeon peas, yellow peas, cutlass beans, bambara beans, choli beans, kidney, cranberry, black bean, great northern, lime, fava. My diet is far more varied now. When I was obese 80% of my diet was wheat, potato and rice.0

I love potato. It's the only food I miss. I am allowed to have them 6 months post-op, but not sure if they are worth it. As you said they are empty calories.

Now that I eat all these delicious creamy starchy beans, I think I would find potato boring. I find the same with my chickpea wraps. I like them more than wheat wraps. I have always cooked curries but now I have taken it to a whole new level. The variety of intense curried beans and Indian vegetarian dishes keep my veggies and starch interesting. Oddly enough I eat more butter and cheese and oil now. My new non wheat breads are a work in progress. I am finding it easier to make flat breads rather than traditional loaves having dumped wheat. I do use spelt though. It is an ancient wheat relative but for me not addictive like regular wheat. I think what helped me was looking at what my food is bringing to the table, so to speak. Wheat, rice and potato just weren't bringing anything but an early grave. You may find after not eating potato for 6 months you may not even want it any more. I don't obsess over food anymore, I just don't think about it nearly as much as I used to. Good luck0
