Third Sunday in Lent - Mar 23

The Third Sunday in Lent continues the story of Jesus arriving in Samaria and sitting down by the well of Sychar—Jacob’s Well—the ancient equivalent of our water-cooler. The disciples head into town to buy meat, but Jesus rests because he is tired and thirsty.
The time is noon—think midday hot sun. Not the best time to come to collect water. Imagine hauling water for your needs from outside of town into town every day. The first haul would be predawn, so there was little chance of evaporation. Why lose any of your haul before returning home? So choosing when the sun is highest would be the least likely time to collect water. This would be the time that most water would evaporate quickly. Yet, the story begins with the time. Noon.
While Jesus sits, a woman comes to the well. Collecting water would also have been a social time for the women, just like our water cooler. I can only think of two reasons for someone to come at this time—an emergency or because the individual is ostracized- from the fellowship of water-cooler mean girls.
Jesus asks the woman to draw him some water to drink. She does a Hollywood double take. “Why do you—a Jewish man—speak to me—a Samaritan woman?” she asks, so shocked by his apparent disregard of her circumstances. She doesn’t say anything about the elephant in the room—why she was drawing water midday, alone—and neither does Jesus. At least not right away.
He treats her with dignity and respect, despite the fact that the townspeople had discarded her as one of no value.
She is shocked he asks her for water because he is a Jew and a man versus her being a Samaritan and a woman. In her mind she had two humongous strikes against her, but we don’t sense an ounce of distain from Jesus or better-than-thou attitude. He not only asks for a survival-dependent drink of water, but he engages her in dialogue about theology.
A lowly woman—put down by her people. A lowly Samaritan—expecting to be disrespected and treated prejudicially.
Jesus elevates her spirit immediately by talking what amounts to the weather—an easy introduction. Then he furthers her self-esteem by talking the spiritual truths of ‘living water.’ She misunderstands, asking him to give her the ‘living water’ so she wouldn’t have to ever draw water again. Jesus still didn’t talk down, but brought the conversation to the most important truth: Jesus was the Messiah. The Savior. The One (better than the One in The Matrix).
Jesus treats her with respect, so gentle and kind. He treats her fairly, as he would everyone else. Equally, regardless of position in society or wealth. Generously, with his time. Patiently, despite her misunderstanding. And she begins to rise up. He says ‘Go get your husband’ which brings up the elephant in the room. She answers she has none.
Jesus compliments her on telling the truth. You have no husband; you’ve had five and you’re living with someone—not your husband. I wish I had been that good when talking to my children. Complimenting them when they were more truthful and making them feel better, even with their shame. She felt shame—briefly, but Jesus dissolved that so quickly and she left it behind along with her water pot.
A woman, who had experienced shame at the hands of friends, family and community, left that shame with her water pot in her joy over meeting the Messiah and her desire to share the Good News with everyone, who would listen. She cast off the needless and focused on the important.
The town, which had discarded her for living ‘in sin’, embraced her for her Good News. The Bible says, “Many of the Samaritans of that city believed on him for the saying of the woman.”
She left her water pot; her shame; her past and her low opinion of herself. She rose up, saw herself as the messenger—an apostle of Jesus’ Good News. She immediately spread the Word. The whole town came back to see who Jesus was. They begged him to stay with him. Her position in town catapulted from the lowliest and most reviled to the honored and appreciated. They listened to her. They came to Jesus through believing her witness.
Are you in places like that? Are you reviled for who you are, or what you have done (or not done)? Do you reach up to touch the bottom of your self-esteem? Are you in despair or experiencing depression?
Bless you! Encounter Jesus, as the woman at the well did. Let him affirm your worth, your value. Let Jesus hold out his hand and raise you up, give you purpose, give you recognition, treat you with respect and without prejudice, love you as you are, engage you in dialogue about the most important things in the world. That is what you are doing now. You are meditating and encountering the Word of God in today’s readings.
The disciples returned and missed the whole point. They didn’t get why Jesus found renewed strength without eating meat. His soul and spirit (which had been depressed and tired out from dealing with the mean-spirited Pharisees) were refreshed with the honesty and directness of the Samaritan woman. She got it. Instantly. He didn’t have to explain a lot. She was very smart and cut to the chase—we know that the Messiah will be…and Jesus said, “I am he.”
She left her water pot—her whole purpose for being there—and rose up to the greater call. She became a disciple of Jesus. She functioned as an apostle of Jesus—spreading the Good News. Jesus sent her with a mission. He stayed for two days (even though they wanted more) and taught the town of Sychar.
Her testimony led hundreds, maybe thousands, to Jesus.
The Old Testament lesson of Moses hitting the rock and producing water, is another story of life-giving sustenance, by faith in Christ. The New Testament epistle in Romans celebrates justification by faith. Paul ends this section with: “But that is not all; we rejoice because of what God has done for us through our Lord Jesus Christ, who has now made us God's friends.”
I know the joy of leading someone to Christ, or helping his/her faith deepen by discovering more about Christ. Nothing matches it.
Let God transform your life. Let him design your self-esteem. Let God’s hand reach you and raise you from despair and depression. (I am not advocating ignoring medications to help, too. Doctors are a part of the way God helps us). And see the great things that God calls on you to do.
Thanks be to God.

121 I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help.
2 My help cometh from the Lord, which made heaven and earth.
3 He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: he that keepeth thee will not slumber.
4 Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep.
5 The Lord is thy keeper: the Lord is thy shade upon thy right hand.
6 The sun shall not smite thee by day, nor the moon by night.
7 The Lord shall preserve thee from all evil: he shall preserve thy soul.
8 The Lord shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore.
John 4:5-42
King James Version (KJV)
5 Then cometh he to a city of Samaria, which is called Sychar, near to the parcel of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph.
6 Now Jacob's well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied with his journey, sat thus on the well: and it was about the sixth hour.
7 There cometh a woman of Samaria to draw water: Jesus saith unto her, Give me to drink.
8 (For his disciples were gone away unto the city to buy meat.)
9 Then saith the woman of Samaria unto him, How is it that thou, being a Jew, askest drink of me, which am a woman of Samaria? for the Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans.
10 Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.
11 The woman saith unto him, Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is deep: from whence then hast thou that living water?
12 Art thou greater than our father Jacob, which gave us the well, and drank thereof himself, and his children, and his cattle?
13 Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again:
14 But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.
15 The woman saith unto him, Sir, give me this water, that I thirst not, neither come hither to draw.
16 Jesus saith unto her, Go, call thy husband, and come hither.
17 The woman answered and said, I have no husband. Jesus said unto her, Thou hast well said, I have no husband:
18 For thou hast had five husbands; and he whom thou now hast is not thy husband: in that saidst thou truly.
19 The woman saith unto him, Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet.
20 Our fathers worshipped in this mountain; and ye say, that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship.
21 Jesus saith unto her, Woman, believe me, the hour cometh, when ye shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father.
22 Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews.
23 But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.
24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.
25 The woman saith unto him, I know that Messias cometh, which is called Christ: when he is come, he will tell us all things.
26 Jesus saith unto her, I that speak unto thee am he.
27 And upon this came his disciples, and marvelled that he talked with the woman: yet no man said, What seekest thou? or, Why talkest thou with her?
28 The woman then left her waterpot, and went her way into the city, and saith to the men,
29 Come, see a man, which told me all things that ever I did: is not this the Christ?
30 Then they went out of the city, and came unto him.
31 In the mean while his disciples prayed him, saying, Master, eat.
32 But he said unto them, I have meat to eat that ye know not of.
33 Therefore said the disciples one to another, Hath any man brought him ought to eat?
34 Jesus saith unto them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work.
35 Say not ye, There are yet four months, and then cometh harvest? behold, I say unto you, Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields; for they are white already to harvest.
36 And he that reapeth receiveth wages, and gathereth fruit unto life eternal: that both he that soweth and he that reapeth may rejoice together.
37 And herein is that saying true, One soweth, and another reapeth.
38 I sent you to reap that whereon ye bestowed no labour: other men laboured, and ye are entered into their labours.
39 And many of the Samaritans of that city believed on him for the saying of the woman, which testified, He told me all that ever I did.
40 So when the Samaritans were come unto him, they besought him that he would tarry with them: and he abode there two days.
41 And many more believed because of his own word;
42 And said unto the woman, Now we believe, not because of thy saying: for we have heard him ourselves, and know that this is indeed the Christ, the Saviour of the world.

Prayer of Encouragement
Dear God, we thank you for the free gift you give us, whereby our faith is counted as righteous, just as Abraham’s was. Empower us to be faithful and obedient, that our spirit might demonstrate your love and grace in all we do. In Jesus name. Amen.
I hope you found a chance to encounter your Creator and experience the Love of God and the joy of Christ in this Season of Lent.
This Third Sunday in Lent tells a wonderful story. The story of a woman, who lived a disconnected, isolated and depressing life, whose encounter with Jesus changed not only her life, but brought salvation to her whole town. Jesus loves empowering the unprepared, the seemingly untrained, untalented and unknown people, and transforming them into powerful, equipped, credible, charismatic and riveting people—soon known by all that need to learn from them.
Jesus saved us and all we have to do is believe to receive salvation. Salvation doesn’t stop there. We might be justified by faith, but sanctification begins to transform us from the inside and equip us to do things we could never have imagined ourselves. Just as the woman at the well transformed her community…and the world that reads her story…each of us can be a special messenger for God.
Go out and be ready for God to do mighty things in your life.*
Thank you for visiting ChapLynne’s Daily Encouragement and Bible Study. God bless you.

So many things meetings happened at that same well. When Abraham sent the angel to find a wife from their tribe ir Issac, that was where his wife was found. Than when Jacob sought a wife he found her there but had to labor 10 years and marry the eldest Leah first. God has plans. There are second chances. God looks at the heart, and forgives. Is that a reason to continue to sin. No. It is good to be in the Grace of God and try to live each day well. We never know who we are encountering we should be witnesses as much as we can. I am trying to live more responsibly each day. These teachings keep me in Gods will. They are a blessing. Thank you Chaplynne.0
