Another newbie

Hi everyone,

I just joined the group today, and have been doing SL 5x5 for 2 weeks. Today was my 6th workout. Prior to that I did about a year of crossfit, which is where I developed the love of lifting! I still started at or near the beginning for SL , though, just because Crossfit hadn't provided me with solid linear gains. (I loved Crossfit, but it's not a progression, really--- in that entire year, I only bench-pressed 3 times, just based on what was assigned on the days I showed up).

I've looked through the first 10 pages or so of posts and will continue to read, in order to avoid asking repetitive questions. My biggest concerns right now are feeling like I'm not doing enough cardio work (I love to run, so I'll likely add a run or two per week) and being smack in the middle of the Beginner's Bloat, in addition to being a few days pre-menstrual. I pretty much look and feel my very worst right now!

But I like what I've seen of this group so far. I'm 46, and I noticed a few ladies around my age, plus I almost died laughing when I read the stickied post that compared the SL 5x5 pdf to sticking your face in the armpit of a sweaty, testosterone-pumped gymbro (my synopsis).

See you in the squat rack!

    Hello and welcome!

Don't worry about the starter gains, in fact, even though it's nearly impossible to do I'm trying my very best to ignore the scale. Like you, I also try to keep my cardio up so right now I do 20-25 minutes of sprint interval workouts after my lifting sessions. On off days I do either an easy long run or some HIIT. I even started bringing Insanity workouts back into the mix this week.

Just do whatever you feel like you can do. If you're up for a run, then do it!

Oh, and I'm 40 and 1/2....as my friends were kind enough to point out to me this week... :grumble:

Thanks, everyone! I love the simplicity of SL 5x5 and this is a great community for me to look around at how others are working it.

I still do a lot of low-intensity cardio. I run 30-60 minutes about 5 days a week, between 2 and 4 miles at a go so not fast. It might affect my strength gains, but I haven't noticed any downsides really (except freakish hunger on days when I do both). Partly, I struggle with thyroid issues and have historically gained weight fast if I stop running, so I am hesitant to stop.

Also, I bike for transportation fairly often (with kids on my bike!)- the heavy lifting has made me FLY up hills!!!!

ETA: I also liked the lifting and cross-training part of crossfit, but really did not like measuring progress by time and not weight moved. Watching yourself get stronger is very satisfying. And I much prefer having my heavy lifting this way - separate from hard cardio and carefully measured with lots of attention to form - seems safer too.
