Hi, i've been lurking here for awhile now. Have a weight set on order and will be here by next weekend. For now should i work on form with a broom or will my form change once i get the bar? Or use the 5 pound (lol) dumbbells i have now? Also, my 14 yr old son would like to start. But i'm sure he wont even be able to lift the bar, he is SO skinny, he weighs about 100 lbs now. Is this program going to be good for him too? Thanks!

Welcome! I think it'd be great to start working on form now with a broom. I find that form is slightly different with something really light, but not drastic. It would definitely help you to get a feel for the movement. Try in front of a mirror if you can.

Also, I think it would be great for your son to do it with you, and I believe there are several women who do this with their sons. You might be surprised at how much he can lift (he is a growing boy after all), but if he can't lift the bar, he'll need to find some intermediate weights (more than the 5lbs you currently have) so that he can work his way up to the bar.

I just wanted to say that I definitely agree on starting with the broom handle... I did. It was good for getting the hang of things before I got weight on.

I used this for starting a friend on lifting, she's still saving up $ for a set... So for your son I've found that a couple of those plastic half-gallon or gallon jugs on the ends of a broomstick are great starting weights. You can fill them half way up with water to start and fill them more each time. When he can lift them full switch to half full of dirt/sand/rocks (which are heavier) and when he finishes those he'll be pretty close to the bar.

    Hope this helps. =)

Thanks for the tips! I don't have a bench yet either but I will start on the rest hopefully tonight. Should I stick to just A day today and do B tomorrow or the next day? Or just work all of them that i can? Since there is no weight it wouldn't stress my muscles to much.

As far as my son, he got tired yesterday lifting garbage bags to the sidewalk. :ohwell: I will have him start practicing form also.
