Thoughts on the "Grand Tour" Challenges...

Okay - it's getting dangerously close to the start of the Giro - Friday 9th May in case anyone was unaware - yep, it's starting on a FRIDAY, probably owing to the logistics of starting over in Ireland then needing to get everyone over to Bari in the single rest day - that's one hell of a transfer, all the way from Ireland to the heel of the boot!
This thread isn't so much a "signup" thread, more of somewhere where we can come up with suggestions as to how to make this year's GT Challenges even better.
So far my biggest problem is, that the place where I used to host the logging spreadsheet is closing its doors on the 1st of May. Which is a complete bloody shame frankly. I tried The Google Spreadsheet but some of the cross-page lookup stuff that I did pretty much broke all the formulae, and it'd have to be a complete ground-up rewrite I think if I end up using that.
I'd like to keep the logging options to a minimum - ideally Strava or Garmin Connect, and would prefer to be able to do the usual 3 "Jersey" competitions - so would require GPS tracking of Distance, Moving Time and Altitude gain/loss, so GPS is a necessity, either via smartphone apps or dedicated GPS loggers (Garmins/Brytons/Cateyes etc)
So, so far, so much the same. So, HOW can we liven things up a bit?
FWIW I don't think the "classics challenge spot prize" kind of approach is going to work for 3 x 3 week tours, it's just far too much to expect people to come up with something "to theme"
One thing I'd like to do, is a climbers bonus for the "Cima Coppi" - the biggest hill of the tour - this year it's stage 16, with climbs of the Gavia and the Stelvio (CC) before a final climb to Val Martello. For this day, I propose that every M of ascent counts as double for the day. We can also do the same for LeTour for it's "queen stage"
Other than that, i'm at a bit of a loss really...
Suggestions welcomed...

Only got a taste of this last year so just being part of it this year will be great and will act as an added incentive to push especially when part of a team, these challenges will be a bit of a better fit for me as it's less focussed on a specific day which has been my undoing on the classics really. Other bonus ideas could be based on the top three of the MPF strava club for each of the Distance, Speed, Climb etc.0
-
I had actually thought about setting up a "invite only" closed group on strava for the challenges as a kind of "live monitoring" thing - but there are a few people who are GC only and I don't want to be completely focussed on Strava to the exclusion of a couple of people who have been with the challenges from the start.0

The GT challenges are my 'favourite' challenges.
This is because my daily commutes etc. count as part of my/my team's distance...
What frustrates the hell out of me (& I don't even run the challenge, so goodness only knows what TBY makes of it?!) is when people sign up for the challenge, then don't ride/log... This not only lets your team down, but also wastes TBY's time & effort...0 -
yeah - sadly I haven't yet perfected the virtual "Bernard Hinault" to send around and kick their arses...
It annoys me, I admit - okay, sometimes things do just get in the way - or, like Fran last year, you get injured a couple of day beforehand and can't join in - but some people do seem to join and then just not bother logging at all. Methinks if they do it on the Giro, they may be blacklisted for the rest of the tours...0 -
I wish I had more or better suggestions but I really don't know of anything right now. I will give it more thought.
One of my limiting factors, is that I consider myself to be more of a bicycle tourist than a racer. I plod along steady like a turtle, and really enjoy long, slow rides. I also have limited hills around me. I feel like I can be a plus for people as a teammate because i can contribute distance if my jobs don't get in the way, but I'll never win anything, and I'm fine with that.
All that said; I enjoy the challenges, as it assist me in learning more about bicycle racing, and the races that occur every year. If you gentlemen across the pond didn't discuss them here; I wouldn't know much about any of them.
Keep up the great work, and I'll try to participate when I can.
I won't be able to ride on May 9th, 10th, or 11th, as I will be on a cruise ship, but will do my part when I get back.
All the best...0 -
Slow and Steady works for me Tom...
I think the great thing about this challenge is that some days even a 5km ride by someone may be the difference between hitting targets or not - so, it really is a case of every ride counts - okay, some people get big distances in, some people get massive hills in, some people turn in amazing average speeds - but generally, the target is do-able provided 4-5 people ride in a given day, and out of a 9 person team that's not pushing anyone too hard.
Oh - and I'd be happy to have you on any team I was a member of Tom :drinker:0 -
Only way to make it better is to start throwing money in and offer real prizes like jerseys or bike paraphernalia, although this does bring up the problem of cheating to "win" then i guess?0

It never stopped Lance Armstrong :laugh:0 -
I thought about an interesting twist, as I was out riding today for my slow 22 miles. Actually, I did ride faster today, but was on my Montague Fit folding road bike, which is lighter.
What if we through in a daily photo contest, and awarded points for things like creativity, best shot, etc, and just had everyone vote everyday. Don't know how we would accumulate points, but thought it would be worth a shot since most of us ride with smart phones with cameras.
Thought it would give us something to look forward too everyday.
Would be no subjective way to judge it, but we'd get a lot of interesting photos to look at.
Just my two cents...0 -

There's a bigger problem with that... I'm fairly sure that "in law" (at least in certain parts of the world) if you offer prizes and or take money for entry, then it becomes an entity that could be sued if someone "participating" has an accident during their ride. Frankly, with the litigious nature of modern culture, I'm not about to take that risk.0 -

Hmmm... not sure about a daily competition/vote, but perhaps a "submission thread" in parallel - with a poll that ran on "rest days"... I know that most of the Grand Tour Rides I have my phone along, but generally, my rides are on pretty much the same route day to day, so I tend not to have many photo's to show for the rides.
Maybe we could call it the "Graham Watson" prize...
( Graham Watson - for those who don't know what the hell I'm on about... - http://www.grahamwatson.com/ - if you've looked at some still photo's of the Classics or Grand Tours over the last 25 years you WILL have seen his work at some point! IMO, he's probably the best sports photographer out there.)0 -
For us Newbies......How to the GT challenges work?0

For us Newbies......How to the GT challenges work?
We set up teams of up to 9 riders - each day of each of the 3 grand tours, we have to collectively ride the same distance as that day's stage. All rides to be logged via GPS and recorded either on Garmin Connect or Strava, and declared as soon as possible after the ride, showing distance (in km's - just because), "moving" time, Ascent (in metres - see reason for distance in km's) and a link to the ride log for verification.
At the end of the tour, we declare a overall winner - the person who's done the highest cumulative distance, a "Sprinters Jersey" for the person logging the highest average overall speed and a "KoM" Champion for the person with the highest overall ascent figure.
If we're really lucky we get 2-3 teams of 9 people, and there's usually a little light-hearted rivallry between teams.
Have a look at last years "Giro" entries thread and the "Signup/Discussion" thread for a better idea...

'Virtual' Dossards of course; it's a weight-saving measure:laugh:

yeah, no Acrylics are injured in the production of our Dossards, but an awful lot of electrons are inconvenienced... #marginalgains0

does that actually have a spreadsheet "engine" behind it though - I don't want everyone who is on the challenge to have to go installing something like the MS Excel reader (if they haven't already got Excel installed of course) just for this challenge...0 -
Gotcha...no it doesn't.0

ah, that's where editgrid was cool...
http://www.editgrid.com/user/thebigyin/MFP_Giro_Challenge_2013
should be a live view, scrollable spreadsheet, that I could actually give people passwords to for editing purposes, and keep it "read only" for others... and it was pretty much 100% excel compatible (unlike google's spreadsheet for example, that doesn't implement one or two multi-page features)0 -
Love the "Graham Watson" award and even though I ride a relatively similar route day-to-day I find myself looking for those moments of cycling life that set it apart from the ordinary - like things you miss while whizzing by at 55mph. And I'm with the other Tom, I may not be racking up huge miles so being part of a team is super great as I feel I can contribute something.
At the start of the year I didn't think I would want to do the Grand Tours, but doing the Classics Challenges re-ignited the fire and I'm looking forward to it. But for tracking, I have no ideas to help..

Excellent - I'm thinking we run a parallel thread for the Ride Logging and the Photo/Reports otherwise with a 3 week long thread, some of the entries will be rather image heavy to be cutting-and-pasting every day...At the start of the year I didn't think I would want to do the Grand Tours, but doing the Classics Challenges re-ignited the fire and I'm looking forward to it. It's supposed to be fun mate, if it becomes hard work, take a step away from it again - I doubt I'll be riding quite as consistently as last year - especially with LeTour - not expecting much in the way of riding happening the first couple of days for example.0 -

That was what prompted the aversion to it at the end of last year, it wasn't any fun. Head re-adjusted, priorities straightened, now I'm back at it. Besides, I like cookies.0 -
I'll be honest, by the end of the vuelta, I just wanted to step away from the bike completely... Iirc I took a break and went hill walking for a while, then found a new (old) challenge of trying another 10 mile time trial... It's whatever you need to do to fight the drabs....0

What about a little "Yanks" vs."Brits" action this year? It would take some team sign-up organization, but it might be fun. We could invite the "frogs" to have a team too. Personally I don't know any on here0

I'm not 100% sure on that - aside from the problems with organizing the initial teams etc. there are a couple of problems with doing it that way.
The first is, the UK climate.. I know we bang on about this - it's a national obsession in a small island with a maritime climate. Problem is, it's not unheard of for the entire country to be "rained off" for a day, occasionally two. Okay, we don't generally get weather systems that last much longer than that, but I'd far rather see the team hit each days targets than worry about beating some other team - this is why I've been happy to have a mixed signup from all around the world in each team. Of course, "the former colonies" aren't immune to bad/adverse riding weather either, but there's a hell of a spread of climates and regions in that big bit of land you lot occupy - it's unlikely that someone in Arizona will get the same climatic conditions as Colorado or Illinois. On the other hand for example - there's maybe a 70 mile radius would cover 5 of the UK riders. (Myself,katozdad,cloggsy71,frannybobs and Jakess1971) with possiby another couple within a 100 mile radius.
The second is pretty much time-zone related. We're between 4-8 hours in front over here, so if we log our rides straight after finishing, we're pretty much giving you all a target to shoot at... I'd hate to discourage people from actually logging promptly, as hanging around waiting for the data is a pain in the backside for me, so that's an advantage we'd just have to hand over.
The third is that frankly, I don't want this to become so competitive that people are actually discouraged from joining "because I don't do enough km's, and don't want to let my country down..." - and I know now that there are a few people that have been entering these challenges for the last couple of years who get to the end of the challenge and message me with a "sorry I didn't ride as much as everyone else" note... they'd most likely not join if they thought that it'd somehow "let the side down" - so for that reason only I'm against national teams
And the fourth is purely selfish - I've a couple of long-term friends on here, from over the pond, who I really like to be on the same team as.
So - from my viewpoint, I'd rather not - but if everyone else thinks its a good idea - I'll not refuse to do it outright - but if there are over 18 signups, put me down for the "foreign legion" team made up of the non-aligned factions - all nations welcome.0 -
If it ain't broke, don't fix it...0

I'm looking to try and bring something extra to it, rather than change things - thats why I kind of like the Graham Watson prize... it doesn't screw with the basics, but gives a bit of extra depth/richness to the experience. Plus of course, I'm hoping for some interesting shots from Alan in the first 3 days of the Giro... can't imagine that he's not going to "bump into some other blokes out for a run" on those 3 days...0 -
I'm just excited to partake in this...having just found the joy of actually being able to ride my bike again and the fun of keeping track of my mileage.
I am happy with whatever you can come up with that is easy to keep organized.
As a Yank hoping to ride LE to JOG in July, I'm not sure what team that would put me on! So whatever works....it's all fun.0 -
I am moving to belfast for the giro weekend
tries to get tickets for the team presentation thursday night but the site crashed! I did however manage to get my hands on a corporate ticket for the start line on saturday from ferrero rocher
I will be on a selfie mission to find the 3 irish riders and the OGE team.
