I think as a general eating theory, it is actually quite good.

Eat good carbs (fruits, veggies, complex carbs!) and fats (chicken, avocado!), eliminate the silly ones (white bread, anyone?), and eat protein. I've been type 1 for over 27 years, and this way of eating keeps my sugars fairly stable (even with a pump, 'bad' foods still seem to make my sugars crazy.)

I don't think you need the bars, etc that they sell...protein powder, Quest bars, etc seem to fill those needs for me.

    Hi Diane,

It is recommended that Type 1s skip the first phase entirely. Putting your body in ketoacidosis is very dangerous and you should not have to worry about treating your lows. I would say use your glucose tabs and turn that basal rate way down, as you already are. I'm a long-timer too, 41 years. I just returned to fitnesspal and have a tremendous amount of weight to lose. When I feel good, I like to exercise, but to feel good, I have to exercise! Do you have a CGM? That helps me head off the extremes.

I agree that south beach is good and that you don't need the bars as someone else already said.

I also think just plan old clean eating works well. Clean eating means real foods that don't generally come in a package. For instance you eat a apple not an apple chip. Minimally processed.

Another good one is the zone diet. Zone has balanced meals and my dr. suggested it me years ago. It has worked for many and may work for you.

One more that I like is the smarter science of slim by Jonathan Bailor. This diet is all about quality. You eat quality foods (ie. not processed, no junk) and you do quality exercise. Meaning you exercise for short periods of time but do it at full intensity to get the most out of the short workout. The food list is a bit restrictive but you don't have to count everything and I know many non type 1 who have had a lot of success with his plan.

I'm in the same boat as you, trying to lose but not making progress. I know I need to eat less but I am hungry all of the time! Feel free to friend me. I have been t1d for 32 years and use a pump and cgm.
