Overhead Press hop??

So I paid for a Personal trainings session so that someone could correct my form or show me how to do the exercises the proper way. My personal trainer showed me how to do an overhead press and I have been doing it this way for 3 weeks now but I'm starting to wonder if it is the 'wrong' way?? He said to start with the bar on in front of your chest resting on your shoulders and then when you pop the bar up and lock elbows, you should hop up and land with one foot in front of the other. Is this ok? It feels good for balance... but I don't know if I am cheating by using that momentum to get the bar up.

ummm hop...no. That sounds like a push press.
I don't even bend my knees when I do OHP...

This thread has a great video showing how to do the OHP0 -
Thanks, I think I will stop doing the hop then
Edit: I just looked up push press. That is exactly what he showed me. urg0 -
With the push press, your feet never leave the floor, but you do a little squat and use your legs to help push the bar up... it kind of sounds like he had you doing a push jerk?

Yeah, they showed you the olympic lifting "Jerk" that is done after a clean. Instead of pushing the bar up with your arms, you get under it by dropping and then stand up.
ETA: Let them know you are interested in the "MIlitary Press" and not a "Jerk" or "Push press"....too many names and variations.0 -
OHP got tough really quickly for me.
I gave the push press a go, for testing purposes  and yeah, easier indeed. But regular OHP for now as that is what the program calls for and I'm trying to stick to it as prescribed.
That being said, in the future, for me, the push press may be the way I go because I like it more.0 -
Don't understand why a trainer would show you how to Jerk the weight instead of the proper form for a Standing Overhead Press. Anyway, a Push Press is going to be easier than a Standing Overhead Press because you are using the power of your legs (which are much bigger muscles than your shoulders) to get the bar overhead. It's a good power move which you'll be able to move more weight, but won't work the shoulder muscles as well as a strict Standing Overhead Press.0
