Bulking motivation

Thought I would start a thread to list the not so obvious benefits of bulking, so as to motivate those who are already bulking or encourage those who haven't started. This is not meant to discourage gals from cutting (I know I will be in that boat at some point), since cutting once you've bulked up is important too. But I know that bulking can be particularly frustrating and intimidating from a mental standpoint if you haven't started yet. Whenever I get down about feeling flabby, I try to remind myself of the positives. I think a lot of the positives I've experienced come from being significantly underweight to start with, so not everyone will experience all of these. But I think many of the gals who are most intimidated by bulking are those who are underweight, so maybe this will encourage those who are in that boat to bulk up to a healthy weight.

Here's my list of positives I've experienced during bulking:
- More muscle growth (obviously)
- More energy and strength during my workouts
- Ability to progress (lift more)
- No more being completely flat-chested
- Better butt
- Hair doesn't fall out nearly as much
- Dark circles under my eyes not as pronounced
- Veins in hands are not as pronounced ('old woman hands')

If anyone has additional positives or motivational tidbits, please add!

Oh, and bulking has also given me a healthier viewpoint on food. There's no such thing as 'bad foods' or foods that one should never, ever eat (unless you have allergies or intolerances, etc). Yes, it is possible to have a bowl of ice cream or other food you enjoy and not feel like you've committed the worst sin imaginable or that you're instantly going to balloon. Women should be able to eat food and not feel guilty about it. Or feel like they immediately need to hop on the treadmill. Bulking can be very liberating.

    Me too, this is great!

    I'd also add:

Ribs & spine aren't visible all the time
I can eat chocolate & ice cream IN THE SAME DAY & not feel bad
No butter knife needed for opening jar lids!
Much higher energy levels in general - I used to feel tired all the time

I'm ready to bulk in mid-August so I'm grateful you posted this as I'm still a bit apprehensive about it. Thanks for posting this.

I think there came a point while bulking where I stopped feeling like I was getting "fat" and just became comfortable. My bulk ended a couple of months ago now and I didn't really start cutting--kinda just maintaining and am happy about it.

Really helps trouble shoot/evaluate food things- do I have issues with food? do I have body image issues?

Do I have *kitten* friends who don't understand my life? It's easy to figure out whose a tool in my life when they give me sht about my life decision.

it's hard- it's mentally challenging- and you have to be confident- and any woman who reaches the stage of wanting to actually BUILD- has taken control and chooses to do so- it shows control- and confidence and it's really important for teaching the lesson that "I"M IN CONTROL OF MY BODY"

sometimes it doesn't feel like it- but that's where the confidence comes in.

These are things that are crucial lessons and valuable gems to be garnered from the process.

Also teaches you how to listen to your body- what it's saying to you- and knowing that it's capable of bending to YOUR will to change.

This. I didn't realize how messed up my relationship with food was until I started trying to gain.

And I no longer feel cold all the time, so that's great!

YES! I'm actually warmer than most people now and I was always freezing before!

Yeah me too! I was just thinking this the other day actually. I used to be insanely cold all the time, it was ridiculous. Usually I would have to bring a parka to the movie theater. Now I just have to bring a light hoodie.

Yes, definitely mentally challenging and a test of confidence (and confidence builder). And you really do learn a lot about your body and how far you can go. I had no idea how much strength I would gain just by increasing my calories.

I love this! I was having that low day bulking recently and this is a great reminder if why I'm doing this! I just keep reminding myself of the awesome body I'll have in the end!

I'll add my little opinions on bulking, i was generally around 125 to 130 when i felt "good" and sexy and whatever.. I have bulked up to 165 right now, and in my mind i'm the sexiest i've ever felt, and i feel better than i've ever felt. I'm rock solid, nothing jiggles, i have all the right curves in all the right places, and even some muscle definitions when the light hits just right. My bones are all firmly held in place where they are supposed to be, which gives me a super fit healthy look. I look at thin bony girls now and feel sorry for them. I also loooove being strong, its so worth it just for functional day to day strength. I can lift anything, do anything, with no fear of hurting my back or straining myself. I love being strong.

Loving all these positive and motivational posts. I can't wait until I feel confident in my body, instead of constantly feeling rather apologetic at my skinny-ness.

Thank God it is nearly summer - I am planning all sorts of concoctions with my newly-purchased ice-cream machine. :drinker:
