Few nursing sessions and sides

I've been feeding from one side per feeding almost since the beginning (I had oversupply issues and had to block feed to control them). Now that we are approaching a year, we're only doing a morning feed and a bedtime feed. (He gets a straw cup otherwise.)

I feed from the right side in the AM and the left side in the PM. I'm gearing up to drop the morning feed soon, but if I only feed from one side each evening, each boob will go about 48 hours without nursing. However I'm worried about feeding from both sides at that bedtime nursing session (when it's the only session per day) because I fear it willl make it more uncomfortable when I stop nursing completely.

I won't be doing one nursing session/day for very long, but I want to make it as easy as possible.

Any thoughts on this?

Thanks!

This is tricky. I feel like removing feeding sessions is so hard because you don't know exactly how it will affect supply or if it will cause clogged ducts, etc.

If it were me, I would feed from both sides at the bedtime feeding after dropping the morning session. I think in the end it will be easier for your body to regulate production. Then again, I'm no expert.

I recently dropped my daytime pumping while at work. So far I've still been able to BF DS on weekends during the day although I'm not sure how much longer I will be able to keep that up. I'm thinking my supply will have to regulate soon. This BF business can be confusing sometimes when it comes to weaning.

    Good luck!

Thanks for your input! I'm leaning towards doing what you said. I think feeding from both sides 1x/day won't make full weaning that uncomfortable for me. At least I'll be sure he's gotten enough milk to get him through the night.

I never realized how difficult BFing could be! In the beginning it's all about keeping your supply up. Then, if you're like me, you actually have an oversupply that makes for a gassy baby. Then you have all the ups and downs, then at the end you want to have enough supply but not too much to make weaning painful for you.

Anyway, I'm glad to have done it for the full year despite my holding on to all this weight. My wallet is grateful, too :)

I don't have any tips for you, but I want to say that you're awesome for making it a year. :)

Aw, shucks, thank you! I really never thought I'd have the patience to make it this far.

As an update, I dropped the morning feed today and fed from both sides just now. Unfortunately I got a wake-up call in the middle of the night last night --> my being awake from 1-3:30AM, so I'm just hoping tonight goes better!

Congrats on making it a year! I am not too far behind you. For some reason I just can't bring myself to drop a feeding yet. I get emotional thinking about not having that bond anymore then I step on the scale and realize that I am never going to drop this weight until after I wean (fingers crossed :) ). I don't even know where to begin with weaning. With my last kid I kinda just dried up toward the end and one day we just stopped and never looked back. I only work 2 days a week and I used to pump at least once during the day, but I just stopped doing that. I am down to maybe 4 feedings a day and I don't have a lot of freezer stash left. Maybe I should just start using 1 bag of frozen breast milk a day until it's gone and drop that feeding. I don't know...I'm dreading it.

Well done for getting this far - BFing is a roller coaster isn't it!

I fed just once a day for some time (3 months I think?) with my first and I used to feed from both sides. I don't think the baby will necessarily feed much more, but it just helped keep things in balance I think.

I had no problems stopping by the way, we just decided on the last day of feeding (my OH put her to bed) and I never had any issues (I guess my supply was pretty low by then, so I didn't notice any accumulation and had no discomfort or pain).

Good luck anyway, I am sure it will work out what ever you do - breastfeeding boobs are pretty amazing things ;)
