Struggle to get out of a Chair or Bed?

Thinking about the RAGBRAI and about the fitness level of some of our members.. which seem to be so much better than my own.. there have to be members in a group with this name who struggle with the simplest of things. I have a few of my own.
Putting on my compression socks
Folding laundry - I have to rest my arms
Tying my shoelaces
Getting out of a chair
So how to get moving?
ANY movement is good. If you can't get out of bed, move something, just a little, hands, feet, anything a set number of times a day several times a day. If you can only walk with a walker.. walk as many steps across the room as you can do.. start with once and then twice etc.
Whatever you can do, just move, just that little bit more and never allow yourself to say I can't. Yesterday I did a 5K I didn't think I could complete.. but I did.. I might have got out of breath, before the finish line I staggered and almost fell over.. but I kept on putting one foot in front of the other.
You can do it, one step at a time.

I am so out of shape I couldn't know if I'm able to even walk a 5k. Good going!
I can only do a few more things now because I'm not as big as I was before. I don't wear my compression socks anymore because the weight loss has kept the swelling away. I can actually put on my own socks and shoes without getting out of breath now. Same for showering.0 -
If I drop something on the floor, I tend to leave it there because crouching down is near impossible.
I can't put on socks or tie my shoes easily
I get worn out going up the stairs
If I sit on the floor I need a chair to help me get back up.
I can't cross my legs above the ankle
Sometimes I have trouble with slight incontinence, which my doctor attributes to a weak pelvic floor which is caused by my weight.0 -
Way to go AwesomeGuy!!! Those little victories add up and eventually have been having big victories. I've never had to wear compression hose, even after my knee replacement surgery (doctor made them take them off as they were cutting off my circulation), but I can only imagine how uncomfortable and hot they are.
Keobooks, I can completely relate to every one of your can'ts. With every pound lost you'll get a little closer to turning those into I cans. The key, like Julie pointed out, is just to keep moving. Every little bit of exercise gets us closer to our goals, even if it's just doing arm lifts or whatever you're able to do.0 -
Yes.. the compression socks are hot.. especially in this hot weather all summer, but I have to wear them for work. The discomfort from it is something I found I have come to accept as my normal.. but it isn't. I can remember back in 2007 when I weighed 180lbs I didn't need those socks at all. Funny how you just accept things as you go and they become the norm.. they shouldn't.0

Things have been really improving. I remember being out of breath putting on sock and shoes, going up stairs or for short walks.
Yoga has helped a lot. I am neither graceful nor elegant doing it but it really helps build flexibility and core strength. It's not always the most enjoyable but I am feeling the benefits (I also apparently have a very flexible pelvis). I sweet like a pig while doing it (its latterly dripping off my nose all over the matt) but its helped so much. I have greater flexibility, greater stamina and strength, stress management and delayed gratification. It helps both physically and mentally (ok theirs some BS I have to smile through, I have a low tolerance for alternative pseudoscience), but the techniques are beneficial even if the explanations are suspect.
I would totally recommend it for anyone. If you can't afford yoga I love Yoga with Adrian's youtube channel for great beginners yoga. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCFKE7WVJfvaHW5q283SxchA
The walking has also been a major help. The stamina and energy I have now are making a huge difference. 45 days ago i could barley make it around the block walking for 20 minuets. Now I can walk halfway across town for 4 miles and feel like I can keep on going (though by that time i've run out of Wait Wait Don't Tell Me Podcasts). I should post the photos of my routes so we can see the progress.
I wear compression shorts for walking. Partly for chafing prevention, wich they are fantastic for, but also for post exercise recovery. My thighs feel so much better now that i wear them. Proper shoes help as well. They may not always be the most comfortable, depending on the amount of compression you need, but they do work.
I'm just so thrilled at the changes that are taking place, and in reality the effort it took to get their was not insurmountable.0 -
RP...that is sooooo stunning. I love hearing about your progress....you are giving me so much incentive and encouragement and I dont think you even realize it:drinker:
I have a couple little NSV I wanna share. I bought a new leather desk chair not to long ago and was disappointed that it seemed so narrow. NOT that I was the guilty party but the CHAIR!!! Anyway....Ive noticed the last couple days...I no longer have a tight fit. It doesnt leave marks on my legs where the arms kinda dig in and when I stand up there is no hesitation!!! :drinker:
And yesterday....I actually got down on the floor and was playing with Killer..my service cat. I brushed her out and then we played. When she got testy with me it was time to quit and I went to get up off the floor without having to crawl or use a chair. YAYAYAYAYA Me huh? Now this is something that has never been easy for me because I have titanium joints so kneeling is a tad touchy time to time. But yesterday it was slick. I was soooo tickled.
Then....today I was not out of breath walking around the parking lot and restaurant. we went to with my sister. I just cant get over the little changes and differences and how fast it was noticeable. (my fire red jeans were even baggy too)
It sure gives you the incentive and push to keep going doesnt it?
Ok enough of me bragging. I hope y'all have a super eat healthy move more forgive often and love hard kinda week0 -

I'm glad what I share can help. I'm also happy to her about your achievements. Being able to see the weight loss in numbers in nice but when you feel it in your life (even if your not seeing the change) is so nice.
I also have an office chair that i bought a year ago and the lift mechanism is totally busted. I remember the day I noticed it and all I can think was me and my fat *kitten* broke the chair the was given as a gift in barley a year ago, nothing like sitting in it and having it slowly deflate and lower. I also never put the arms on it because I was worried that I wouldn't be able to fit properly, still do.
When i went to the theaters today i was happy to notice that the chair was a lot more comfortable, over the past year I have dreaded sitting in movie theater seats. The feeling of the arm rests digging into you, having a family member ask if you want to put the arm rests up to make it more comfortable since they notice how poorly i fit in the seat (how demoralizing). But today I was comfortable, the arms were down and I didn't notice.
Keep up the good work with the walking, the changes can come fast if you just keep doing it a little at a time. I've been building distance and now I need to stop and go back to shorter walks and try to increase my pace.0 -
Struggle for me and the chairs trying to support me.
No longer have to worry about my weight breaking the plastic chairs. Surprised the one below made it through my nap session (March 2013 so i was not at my highest but close) lol,.
