Extremely painful breastfeeding :(

My daughter is 15 months old and still breastfeeds alot day and night. I've had no pain during breastfeeding since she was a month old. Now suddenly whenever she breastfeeds iam in extrrme pain to the point where I'm considering cutting her off cold turkey :-( Ive re examined her latch and everything seems fine and normal there. I can't see anything wrong with the nipple to indicate thrush or an infection, nothing is visible anyway. It feels like it's just the nipple that hurts (even if it's just nudged or tapped iy hurts) and when I get a let down the pain becomes even worse until it's over, I've not had let down pain for over a year and definitely never this intense. Has this happened to anyone else or anyone have a suggestion on what itcould be? Ive phoned the doctors but the first available appointment is in 4 days

could she be teething ? sometimes the saliva becomes more acidic while teething and it can make you very sore. i've been through it with my almost 19 month old recently.0

Yeah it could be. She's got 12 teeth at the moment and I didn't have a problem with breastfeeding when she got them but the past few days she's been waking up literally every hour so it could be teething.0

If she's drinking at all from a straw or sippy cup, that may affect how she nurses. My baby is about to turn one, and since he's gotten proficient with the straw cup, he's been nursing differently. Sometimes he tugs really hard or sucks like a straw, and it hurts a little. Nothing like you describe, but I've also noticed that sometimes he likes to nibble his silicone straw, which has carried over a couple of (very painful) times to BFing. Could it be that she's using her teeth a bit while BFing but not enough for you to really notice, and that's why you're so sore?0

I had thrush with no visible signs of it. It was aweful. In my experience, it isn't what you are describing. I remember reading somewhere recently that as the baby gets older, it gets more painful for the mum.0

I don't think she's biting because I had a lot of trouble with that when she was first teething. It feels more like a burning pain than a sharp one. She was sitting with me on the floor a minute ago and when she laughed I noticed white patches in her mouth. Could this be thrush? I dont have white spots on my nibbles so don't see how it's affecting me though. I'm going to ring our doctors and see if they can get her in on an emergency appointment.0

Only just seen your message lj3jones. Were there any signs that your baby had it?0

Sounds like a slight infection. Do get an appointment to get it seen to asap. In the meantime try cooling yourself before feeding. Cold cabbage leaves are easier to slip in your bra than a pack of frozen peas, lol. And may be a relief after too. Also take paracetamol.0

Thanks ladies. I managed to get us into the doctors and apparently we both have thrush. My daughter has drops and I've got cream. My doctor said if it's still painful after the weekend then I need to get back in as the thrush could have gone deeper into the breast and so I'll need a tablet form of treatment instead. Extreme pain is my only sign of it as my breast looks completely normal. Anyhoo hope it clears up soon so I go back to enjoying breastfeeding instead of dreading it :frown:0

On one hand, I'm sorry it's thrush, but on the other hand, I'm glad you at least figured it out and are on the road to recovery!0

I guess I was wrong When I had thrush, neither the baby nor I had an visible signs. It hurt during breast feeding, but the worst for me was after breast feeding I it felt like I had shooting pain particularly if I bent over, at one time I actually googled heart attack because it was worst on my left (the breast I am now having supply issues with (it was also cracked and bleeding for the first few weeks.)
I just had to use the cream. It took about 2 weeks for it to completely clear up. Is the cream the jack newman cream (anti-fungal, anti-biotic, steroid)? If so, that stuff is awesome.0 -
I don't think so, the cream says clotrimazole 1% I'm not sure what brand it is etc. It feels like it's actually getting worse :frown: I was actually crying with it last night whenever she had a feed. It's the worse pain I've ever had while breastfeeding and I had cracked/bleeding nipples the first couple of weeks. How long does it take to feel even a slight improvement? I've cut her down to one feed in the day time (usually has about 5) and she has around 4 at night.0

Clotrimazole is a generic antifungal cream. My son got it for when he had a yeast infection in his diaper area after a bad bout of diarrhea.
I don't know about thrush, but with a yeast infection on the skin, it does take a few days to see improvement.0 -
the cream I had had a steroid in it which helped with the pain. I think for me it was a full 2 weeks before it was all cleared up. Is it nyastatin that the baby has? It gave my baby a sore tummy, but he as also very little (like 1 month?)0

Yeah my daughter has nystan drops, don't think they've affected her much yet though she is much more gassy than usual. The white areas in her mouth have gone now there just slightly red so it's really working for her. She only feeds from one breast, has been like that for 6/7 months. Would there be any chance if I fed her with the other one that the milk will come back? The other brrast is thrush free so far so wouldn't be particularly painful0

you could look into relactation for that if you have totally dried up on that side. how are you guys doing other than that? she's doing better? are you still in pain?0

We're not doing too bad now. My daughters thrush has completely cleared up now. I still have it and it's still really painful to feed her but it doesn't make me cry when I do now so it must be getting better! My daughter has started to dry nurse on the unaffected breast in the day so it's giving the other one a bit of extra healing time. Really looking forward to painfree breastfeeding again.0

Just an update incase anyone has this same problem and finds this thread. My daughters and my thrush has cleared up now. It took my daughters 3 days to clear up and mine 8/9 days. The pain during breastfeeding started to ease off 6/7 days after starting treatment with completely painfree breastfeeding by day 9. The only thing I will say is try and get it diagnosed as early as possible because I left it for 3 days before approaching a doctor and I now have scar tissue all over the infected nipple (I'm assuming from the open sores caused by the thrush that struggled to heal) though it doesn't affect breastfeeding whatsoever. And lastly just stick with it. I was so close to giving up breastfeeding because the pain was excruciating and made me cry at every feed but I'm so glad I powered through and continue to breastfeed. :flowerforyou:0
