Restaurants

I am always struggling with restaurants.... My boyfriend wants to take me out to eat and has given me a choice... Outback or Olive Garden. I looked up the items on the menu and everything at both is so high in sodium even the low cal choices.... I had no idea the amount of sodium I was already eating and I'm really trying to cut it down. Even the salad at the O/G is 700+ mg per serving... and lets face it... no one eats one plate of that
So can anyone give me suggestions or advice? I don't want us to be shut-ins just because I'm trying undo mistakes I have made.

Why just those two restaurants? Although, the good thing is that they are chains so you can look up the nutritional info unlike a mom and pop place. I guess the best you can do is try to only have one salad, or ask for dressing on the side, or no potatoes or bread. I ask my husband to give me at least a days notice so that I can plan accordingly starting with breakfast. A little smaller portions throughout the day so I can have "extra" at the restaurant. Good luck!
oh and ps... sodium sucks. It will affect your weight for a couple days, but drink lots of water and go with the low cal. At least you will know it is water weight.0 -
I would choose outback, we ate there not long ago and I had a small steak and sweet potato and I didn't think it was all that bad calorie wise. 6oz Outback special - 254 cals, the potato was more calories, but I am sure you could get steamed veggies for less and I had a small side salad and some of the bread/butter. I just ate a light lunch the day we went0

If you are eating out anywhere just forget about sodium. Its gonna get you no matter what. I use Olive Gardens dressing at home. I use the lite version. I'm not sure if you can get it in the restaurant or not? It is so freaking good. Would never know the difference from the full version and 30 cals for 2 Tbs.0

Oh and I would definitely choose outback. Just because breadsticks. Who can say no to those OG breadsticks? Not this girl!:noway:0

I feel you.. I have to have low sodium and any eating out is full of the stuff. I had to bite my lip in Weight Watchers last night too when Pat was on about the smoothies again.. they have sodium in, I can't eat them.. ditto all their little snack thingies. It truly sucks. So I guess low sodium the rest of the time and occasionally when you eat out forget the sodium thingy in restaurants, just try to make the wisest choices. You could also try asking them to steam, serve without butter, etc. Though I have to be frank guys, we don't eat out often, why in the hell would I want it without butter?0

In the UK, we don't have either of those restaurants but I have been to both when we lived in the States!
My Hubby and I tend to go out for a meal once a month on our 'Anniversary' and we go to a pub and have a meal that is typically under 500 cal.
We were talking about this yesterday and we agreed that as we don't go out all that often, we could choose a higher calorie meal and just enjoy it. When I have a cheat day, it's only ever really for one meal - my stomach condition wouldn't let me do a full day!
I think it all depends on what you're comfortable with!

THANKS for all the wonderfull suggestions. You all made really valid points. I'm still not sure what we will do but I know I wont beat myself up about it. I am making good desicions every minute of every day so far and we do not eat out all that often anymore. I totally agree with blondageh, there is no way I can say no to the breadstick.... or even one plate of the salad. I like to fill up on the salad to make sure I dont eat much of the bad stuff. A steak and steamed veggies with salad on the side sounds nice too!!0
