Orthotics

Does anybody wear them, custom or OTC? My foot doctor recently prescribed me a pair of OTC orthotics (my insurance wouldn't cover custom). They have a lot of arch support for my extremely high arches. I have been wearing them for about a month but I am not sure I like them I think they may be causing me excess strain on my achilles. Does that make sense? Does anybody have any experience, good or bad, with orthotics for running?

I have had custom for maybe 6 years. Was not really having any problems but always looking for that edge. Work into them. There is also an article on Runners World (I'll see if I csn find) to give you exercises and potentially minimize or eliminate the need for orthotics0

Thanks! Looks like just what I need. I will do these tonight.0 -
I've had them. They did more harm than good for me. My foot needed to be stregnthed not "supportived". I wear incredibly neautral & 0 drop shoes. All my PF issues were slowly reduced when if got to a lower and lower drop & a less corrective shoe.
That's just my experience, everyone is different.0 -
I totally agree with Victoria. Neutral, zero drop with flexible cushioned shoe works best for me. I often wonder if a lower profile helps prevent twisting ankles. I know our feet were meant of sense the ground so we don't have to look down all the time while on trails, for example.0

I simply will not run without my PF OTC inserts in my shoes.
With the inserts in at my local running store, they can't see my pronation when they check me out in a pair of shoes. Without them in, it's very obvious!0 -

I was thinking of trying a zero drop shoe. I think this might work for me. Thanks for the input. Any preferences?0 -
Superfeet. I swear by them and have them in all my athletic shoes. I have had plantar fasciitis so I need them.
The beauty of Superfeet is that the brand has about four or five different kinds with a slightly different amount of heel.
I wear zero drop shoes and I have Superfeet in them. I am a mid-foot/fore-foot striker and I had wanted to wear minimal shoes for some time. But I was nervous because of my feet and I was not sure the insoles would work in shoes that were more flexible.
But, I waited until my feet got better and, so far, it has worked really well. I have had no return of my PF and I like my shoes a lot.
I have heard that many podiatrists feel that OTC orthotic insoles are as good as custom ones. That has been my experience with Superfeet.
I think that just about any serious running store would have them. Mine -- Fleet Feet -- has every type and all sizes. Must be a popular item. I wear the blue or black ones, since they have the least amount of heel.0 -
Just to chime in and agree that the Sports medicine DR I saw and the people at the running store both say that OTC orthotics are just as good. I have been using my current inserts for about 18 months and just got a new pair of shoes and let them inspect my inserts, they say they are still good to go and can wear them for a while longer.
My Dad has horrid ankle issues but he broke his, the military said it was sprained, he walked on it forever in lots of pain, and it was basically shattered. He needs custom ones.0 -
I ran with inserts that my podiatrist recommended when I was dealing with the dreaded planters fasciitis.
I have a tendency to run on the outsides of my feet (supination). I realized the inserts where making this even worse to the point that I was busting out of my running shoes around 150 miles. So I have ditched them and haven't had any foot issues or busted shoes since.
BTW: I was using PowerStep insoles.

Following..
I am in the midst of a nasty bout of plantar fasciitis that has already had me out for a month.. At the first appointment the doctor wanted to put me in custom orthotics but i declined and got some of their OTC ones to at least put in my dress shoes.. not sure about my sneakers yet. The doctor was not a fan of me wearing my purecadence and wanted me in a shoe with more cushioning.0
