Results for the First section of the Grand Tour Challenge (Giro d'Italia) are as Follows:
first of all the Maglia Rosa overall competition...
Rider #305 - Jakes1971 with a frankly amazing distance of 1811.2km - or, to put it in perspective 52.57% of the ACTUAL distance the pro's rode. Considering the weather conditions that the UK suffered under for most of the duration of this challenge, it's doubly impressive. Hopefully he's just about dried out by now...
Second place goes to Rider #333 Antistu, who rode 1380.5km in the first two and a bit weeks, then took the final week off due to work commitments - otherwise I think things may have been a little closer.
Third step on the podium goes to a regular on these challenges, #301, FatDadSlim and another incredible 1190.1km.
To put things in perspective, we set out to ride 3,445km beween a 9 person team - the PODIUM have managed 4381.8km between the three of them.
Secondly we come to the competition for the Maglia Rosso Passione.
Well, it's very much "business as usual" for the Sprinter's prize (yes, I know technically the Rosso is a "points" jersey, but that doesn't really translate to this challenge easily) with our resident flyer - Rider #303 - Cloggsy71 who not only ride every stage that the pro's did, but only dipped below 30+kph AVERAGE on three of the 21 stages, and ended up with what I find a slightly staggering overall average of 32.69kph
And Finally, the Maglia Azzurra Climbers competition...
And yet another Jersey for the man in pink...Rider #305 - Jakes1971 - who clocked up 18,837m of ascent, that's over 2.1 times the height of Everest from Sea Level. Speaking as someone who gets dropped when riding over a railway bridge, I find it frankly amazing!
Hopefully, the final results are now showing in the spreadsheet at
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1qoBU3Om2ZzFmPSacvUlwW5n5cG3_mF2JYPWGwnbRyuU/edit?usp=sharing
And As always well done to everyone who got out there and did a ride and joined in the fun...
(I may add a little more analysis to this thread later, along with the results of the "Graham Watson" thread once It's been judged...)

WOW... No FDS Sweep this year! Great job y'all!0

Woohoo! I seem to suit red
Some of these totals are absolutely AMAZING! Chapeau ALL for taking part!
If I might, I'd like to nominate TBY as 'Ciclista del Giro' for not only riding every day that the Pro's rode, but also for riding 1155.2km's in the process; just over a third of the total distance for the Giro!
Also, I'd like to say a heart-felt 'thank you' to TBY for running these tours; much like the 'Classics' rides in Spring/Autumn, these 'Grand Tour challenges' really do 'make my summer' and give me a 'reason to ride'. Much like TBY said "Some day's I found myself questioning 'What the hell am I doing this for...' ", when the rain was lashing down, but we needed the KM's. Then I though 'for the Team & there is no 'i' in team!'
Long may it continue!0 -

All of that is heartily seconded. That distance is excellent TBY - particularly considering your "delicate" situation at the start of the tour!!
Well done for some amazing distances, amazing climbing, super speedy rides - and to everybody who got out there and rode when they wouldn't normally have all because they were inspired by this challenge!
Thanks Mark, you are amazing for running these challenges :-) :flowerforyou: (although I suspect you'd prefer... :drinker: )0 -
Feeling pretty proud in pink, I mentioned to TBY I was going for a podium and might have got a bit over enthusiastic about it really but that says a lot about how well this was organised as always a top notch job and long may these challenges continue, they really are head and shoulders above anything else you'll find on MFP and Strava for that matter.
Stu really let me off the hook or it would have been very close, very glad I didn't have to do more in that awful final weeks weather, amazing speed by Cloggsy, how he's so consistently fast I've no idea.
As a token of respect to my team Captain FDS I'd like to pass onto him the climbers jersey, he was right with me in the climbing until life threw a spanner in that last week and more then deserves it.
Respect to all that turned a crank, I really hope to see most of you in Le Tour.0 -

Oh don't, TBY will be performing randomising drug tests on Le Tour lol, I already have my 'it's purely for medicinal purposes' defence ready ....0 -
I assume you DO have a T.U.E. for the Asthma Inhaler0

Can't wait to watch you two and antistu go at it head to head to head next time. Here is to everybody being more settled and not traveling during TdF! Cheers to all of you. I am amazed by the dedication y'all have. Even at my best I couldn't hang with you guys at your worst...0 -

Lol yep, I prefer taking that to popping my clogs , on the plus side since dropping that recent 10lbs the inhalers are seeing less and less action, now that is a win!0 -

I'm looking forward to it already , I might even be brave and go for a x01 slot, roll on July 5th!0 -
Well done guys amazing efforts by all.
Our wee virtual cycling club is going from strength to strength!
Be proud captain TBY!
It would be interesting to see some comparisons against last years figures, the total distances for the winners & team and also what it took to win the Primes?0 -

I've got last years records on the main computer upstairs, I'll have a look at something of that nature tomorrow morning in between doing some gainful employment...0 -
Congrats to the podium finishers and the rest of the peloton.
See you in July. :bigsmile:0 -
Thanks again TBY! On cycle vacation in July... Should help my mileage! Can't wait!0
-
TBY, Awesome job on the challenge. It was the only reason I went out to ride in the cold and wet. I am now girding my loins for July when it will be even colder and wetter:grumble: . Bring on the Vuelta when the shoes on the other foot. :laugh:0

That would be interesting; I know without looking that this has been my best overall distance on a challenge BY A COUNTRY MILE!
Look forward to seeing the comparisons!0 -

well - i've dragged the 2013 spreadsheet out and pulled it into Google Doc's - it makes a bit of a mess of the formatting on import, and as it's a old spreadsheet, I'm not inclined to spend masses of time in tidying it up immediately, but if you want to see the overall stats from last year it's available in the sheet here...

Overall the 3 teams last year rode a virtual parcours that was 40.2km shorter than this year (3405.3km)
The three teams rode 5,329.6km, 4,109.7km and 4,664.3km respectively, so again, all three teams completed the distance.
The Podium distances were 1,436.0km, 1,286.8km and 969.7km in 2013 - compared to 1,811.2km, 1,380.5km and 1,190.10km this year.
The Sprinters jersey was taken with an average speed of 34.00kph in 2013, as compared to 32.69kph - Clive's got a little slower, though in fairness, he did ride every day of the tour this year, rather than 9 stages from 21 in 2013, and clocked up almost 3 times the distance with only a small speed deficit. That in my mind is highly impressive.
Climbing figures were slightly down on last year - 2014's top three ascents were 18,837m, 11,790m and 8,493m as compared to 2013's 21,550m, 11,867m and 11,802m. The "Steepness index" of the jersey winner's riding was also down - 2013's winner FatDadSlim hit an astounding 16.75m of ascent per km, as compared to Jakess1971's 2014 figure of 10.40m/km. This is probably reflected in the difference in terrain on commutes based in Nottinghamshire and the Breacon Beacons...0 -
Whoa... On a personal note, I have impressed myself with what I managed to achieve over and above last years totals!
I only rode 9 stages last year - shame on me
As far as the GC riders are concerned, I'm still hugely impressed with both the distances and climbing done by those guys... Awesome!0 -
Well - the votes are in for the Graham Watson Prize...
In third Place... Sufferlandrian with
in Second Place... FatDadSlim with
but the overall winner was CentalCaliCycling with this stunning Image...
Overall, some cracking images, and really gave a flavour of what we've been through over the last 3 weeks or so.0 -
Superb stunning shots, well deserved winners0
-
Great results all around. I really enjoyed the photos this time; I thought it added a new dimension...0
-
Great job to all, Congrats to the Podium winners and fantastic image, I really linked that thread!0
-
Congrats to all the winners. Although I could never keep up with you guys, I had fun watching you go and adding what I could.
On another note, I really want to thank TBY for a great challenge and I'm looking forward to the next one. It was well done and it inspired me to ride more than I normally would have. Days I would have just loaded the bike in the trainer because of bad weather, I still felt like I needed to get out there. I made for some fantastic scenery and some really cool bragging rights back at work. Thanks for all you did! :drinker: :drinker: :drinker:

No need in repeating what everyone else said already. I enjoyed this challenge much more so than the Strava ones I have participated in the past. In particular, it was great meeting/riding with/competing along side other riders and as a result several of you have become people I quite enjoy conversing with on a daily basis. IMO, that's what cycling is all about. There will always be someone who is faster and can go further--each of us pushes the limits of our own capabilities. And through that suffering, it's nice to meet some other crazies that enjoy the madness as well.

Well here's me, late to the punch as always A super fun challenge this time, I greatly enjoyed it! Really looking forward to the TdF as I'm hoping to get a new bike for it... ok, actually I'm getting it for the Pedal the Cause ride in September, but the TdF will be my training!0

I'll unsticky this thread now, just doing a little tidy-up prior to the LeTour 2014 Challenge coming on stream.0
