Hi All,
Just saying hi. I am getting sleeved next Friday 13th June and pretty apprehensive. I've managed to lose about 8kg (17lb) already in 13 days on the liquid diet but really feel ready to snap and go buy a burger or something that I won't be able to eat after being sleeved. Constantly hungry all the time, but only 1 week to go
Good luck and best wishes to everyone here. I hope you meet your goals...
Cheers,
DJH

At least for me, pre-op was the worst part. High anxiety and hunger, but it gets better! Keep your eye on your goal to be healthier and you'll be on the other side before you know it!0

You won't be hungry after the surgery, at least not for awhile. Trust me. It's hard to imagine but it's true. Hang in there, you'll do great! See you on the other side!!0

I didn't have to do a pre-op liquid diet, but I was pretty anxious before surgery, to the point of not being hungry. Go figure :-) You will do great, just one more week, and then life will change for the better! Good luck to you!0

Just consider this a whole body cleanse. A liquid fast gives your brain amazing clarity. Did you know that many great artists in the Church fasted and prayed for a month in order to design a new triptych, statue or painting? This brought them closer to God and their instrument (their body). Try to focus on you and how incredible you must already be looking having lost that much weight already. How great your clothes feel, how much lighter every step you take. 13 days and you are crushing it! Most people have cheated by now and not lost nearly as much. By going thru this trial now you will be stronger after the surgery when you don't want to gag down your protein. Remind yourself that you are sword being sharpened for the battle ahead and you are so ready for this fight. You are awesome!!0

Congratulations on the weight you've already lost! I know this pre-op part isn't easy, but it will get better and you really won't be hungry for awhile after. This is just a small step for your new life! You can do it!!0

Hang in there. For me- the pre surg liquid diet was the worst. I was dangerous. I had to work at home so I didn't beat any one to death with my shoe or something.
Don't trash all of your hard work with a burger. It gets easier. I will say the first 21 days after surg were the hardest in terms of "breaking up" with certain foods- like soda, rice, pasta, bread- I haven't gone back to eating them but missed them like an addict. I actualy had dreams about eating garlic bread or alfredo sauce. It finaly passed, and I'm glad I stuck it out b/c I don't think I would be seeing the progress I am now if I hadn't developed my self discipline w/ the pre op diet.
Also - turning off the TV helps. You don't realize how EVERY 20 seconds there's an add on TV for food until you're on such a severe diet.0 -

The 21 day thing is so true. Up until yesterday, my three week anniversary, I wanted anything and everything that I was able to eat before surgery. Then last night when I got home from work, I realized I was just over it. I looked in the fridge for something to eat for dinner and realized that I just didn't want anything. I ate a couple of bites of refried beans with cheese on them but that was so I didn't start snacking before I went to bed.
The thing with the ads too, they used to kill me! I don't notice now, but for a couple of weeks afterwards, it felt like every single commercial was fast food or a candy bar. I swear they were tag-teaming me to make my life difficult. Hang in there! It does get easier. You'll wake up one day and it'll all be over. :flowerforyou:0 -
I was horrified about the pre-op liquid diet, my support group kind of made a big deal about it...but I didn't have a problem with it...at least I got something to eat! I discovered how much I liked the Progresso Light Soups I was supposed to eat..even if they were blended, they still tasted great. The biggest thing I learned from this so far is that if I just do what my Dr.'s office clinic tells me to do....and follow their plan to the letter...I don't have any problems. They gave me grocery lists and menu plans, and it was easier to follow them since they have so much more experience with this than I do. On the liquid diet I bought a 100 pack of index cards and sat down one night and planned out my entire two weeks of meals. When the time came, I just followed each card and didn't have to "wonder" what I was having for any meal. I was worried about having the surgery "at my age" (58) but soon realized I was not the only one at my age finally figuring out "life" and making better choices. I left my old ways behind (that's what got me in this jam in the first place!).....I have a new beginning...THIS TIME I am going to do this right. BTW, when getting hungry it helps me to figure out...is my hunger PHYSICAL hunger or is this just HEAD hunger? And yeah, if I see one more damn Culver's new hamburger commercial on TV I am going to lose it. Hang in there....the rewards are worth it!0

Like everyone said it will get easier, just hang in there. Besides no one said you couldn't have a burger EVER. It will just be down the road after you heal and it will be smaller because that is all you will require. Don't think that you will be depriving yourself of certain foods because that can mess with your mind. Just keeping thinking that you can have it just smaller portions. That helped me. Good Luck with the surgery and your new lifestyle.0

Welcome!! I was very fortunate in that my liquid diet was only 4-5 days long. 3 weeks? Wow. The good news is that it is temporary. My suggestion? Just deal with today. Tell yourself you will have that burger tomorrow. Then when tomorrow comes, say, "I will have it tomorrow"...lol.. pretty soon you will have made it to surgery burger-less. It can be done! Please stay in touch post op so we know how you are doing and can offer encouragement. Best of luck to you!0

Hi
For me the pre op phase was hard. But I was travelling through airports for a week of it. So packets of shakes were the go. I wanted to chew my arm off some days for sure. It is easy to say in hindsight but you will feel better after the surgery in regards to hunger. There will be some adjusting of course but you wont be able to eat that burger anyway which is the reward for all of your hard work before surgery. My liquid stage was 15 days and I only lost about 11 lb before surgery but it was enough. You can do it,,you really can. There are such great rewards to come. :-)0 -
Way to go on your weight loss on the liquid fast and being days away from being sleeved. YOU WILL GET THROUGH THIS AND IT WILL BE SO WORTH IT!!! I am not speaking from experience as I will be sleeved in the fall and can only have DIABETIC BOOST for two weeks. I don't even think I can have soup. Not to compare horror stories. lol. And weening off caffeine as well before the surgery or I will have killer headaches from the withdrawal.
I look forward to following your journey this next week and post op.
Hang in there my friend... there is a lot of support here. YOU'VE GOT THIS THING.0 -
I agree with everyone else, but we all don't have the same requirements pre-surgery. I only had 7 days to lose 10 lbs. If I would have had to go 3 weeks, I may have been climbing the walls. What I did do and still do is freeze my shakes, yogurts, smoothies into an ice-cream type texture and eat them with a spoon. It gives me the feeling of eating - not drinking - and are very refreshing.
In my case I had no problems post surgery - any pain (minimal) was gone within a couple days, my taste buds changed but came back and I break my meals into 5 - 6 small meals a day, always with protein first. I really didn't have any nausea which may be due to me being on prescription Prilosec 40g for decades. My hardest hurdle was to not drink with meals or within 30 minutes either way after a lifetime of doing this. My surgeon has stages of food that last for 2 full weeks or more that end up with the real/normal foods that you will be eating the rest of your life. The only analogy I can come up with is that you don't start a baby out on steak, they have to work their way up to the various types and textures. In essence, that's what we're doing. The only time I got sick was twice when I knew I was eating too much, too fast.
You have done a tremendous job of losing weight pre-surgery and I am now 4 months out and can have just about anything I care to try. I do try one food at a time to see if my stomach can tolerate it. I still haven't tried any type of red meat and will probably wait for a few more months.
I'll be wishing you the best on your new adventure and on your surgery next Friday. Keep talking to people in the group and re-read all the information you have so far and keep in mind how far you have already come.
