Pentecost Sunday, the Day of Pentecost -- Pentecost Week, retold the story of the day when the Holy Spirit came upon the disciples, who had gathered in uncertainty of what to do. It must have felt akin to what we call a ‘Twilight Zone episode.’
There they were quietly discussing what they were going to do, eating and sharing…when the sound of wind came from overhead and stirred in the room (without open windows). Cue the Twilight Zone music, because the next thing was what looked like a tongue of fire that rested on each of them. And they were filled with the Holy Spirit, each began speaking in a different language. The many people that had gathered there, from across the world,, were stunned to hear the Good News spoken in their own languages.
Many years ago, when I traveled through Europe as a teenager, it was such a treat to hear someone speaking in English. Native to English. We would greet each other and exchange where we hailed from. It was instant camaraderie. The day of Pentecost struck people in the same way. Unexpectedly, people from a foreign country heard their own languages spoken. They wondered how it was possible.
Others—there are always naysayers—who heard the languages spoken without understanding the words, scoffed and labeled them as drunkards.
Peter—the man of action—stood up and in his booming voice, called to everyone and explained they were not drunk (after all it was only nine in the morning) but were filled with the Holy Spirit like the prophet Joel had prophesied. He quoted from Joel how people would prophecy—young and old, male and female, slave and free. The egalitarian aspect may have flummoxed people. Imagine a female slave speaking while a male owner watched. Peter explained, the work was God’s, not human.
The bottom line: whoever believes will be saved.
Equality for all. Everyone is welcome at the table of God. The reward is eternal life.

Dear God, we celebrate your gracing your followers with the Holy Spirit, just as you promised. The Spirit empowered the message to go out when the limitations were great. We want to be used of you in the way the disciples carried the message to those who needed to hear. Wherever we are, dear Lord, help us to reach out to those in need. In Jesus name, Amen
Conclusion
Sunday, the Day of Pentecost -- Pentecost Week exploded the work of the disciples into the foreground—much akin to having the front pages of newspapers and magazines emblazoned with photos and action words of the Holy Spirit’s indwelling and transforming ordinary souls into profound preachers.
God told Moses, when he complained that he wouldn’t know what to say, that the words would be provided. At Pentecost, not only the words, but the language was provided. The power of this miracle could not be over-stated. At a time when global communication worked at a snail’s pace, having a few speak in languages known only to visitors, who would return to their homelands, carrying the message, insured the immediate spread of the Gospel across the known world.
When in school, we studied ‘critical mass’ of influence. One person could influence 10-20 people, profoundly. The old, ‘he told two friends, and they told two friends, and they told two friends’ moved the message from one person to three, to nine, and to twenty-seven…etc. That was with only 3 layers of telling.
Social media today impacts even more. “Going viral” means a transformation of spreading news. We must pray for opportunities for the Holy Spirit to ‘go viral’ in today’s world and for the Good News to be spread every day, in ways that we cannot imagine, but are miracles like Pentecost…even in our day.
Go out and be ready for God to do mighty things in your life—for the glory of God.*

I have been in my own will for awhile. I have been saying my good morning to God and the Lords prayer each day, but have been eating too much, not logging my food and certainly not exercising. I have been out of Gods will, and he teaches me lessons. I don't know how I can act like I am a teen and am 71. I read in the Bible the other night about how fleeting life is. I must remember that I have to be accountable. I am finally quiting my part time job on August ,27 it is about time I will be 71.5 if God wills for me to get to that day. I am vulnerable, lonely, and was hopeful, and that's no excuse but short promises gave me hope. I must remember to keep reaching out in Gods love to others who are lonely. This lesson tells me that I have a comforter and all I need to do is talk with him, and follow the Holy Spirits lead. God is good. I can't imagine not knowing him, but than I can't imagine his forgiving grace that's greater than all my sins. Prayers please for me to follow Gods will with my emotions, my will, my food, and my exercise. Bless you all and thank you.0
