Bird in the Hand Half Marathon

So, due to the postings here, I registered for the Bird in the Hand Half Marathon. It will be my first real half marathon race. I did a virtual half marathon on June 1st, so I know that I can cover the distance, but I will definitely be in the back of the pack.

Would my best bet be to just do as I've been doing, run when I can during the week and try to have at least one long run 6-13 miles once or twice (for the 6) when I can fit it in? I've been averaging 20+ mpw for the past two months. Or should I find and do a plan, even if it starts me with less miles in the beginning?

I am very slow, my best 5k race was just under 36 minutes and my virtual half marathon took me over 3 hours. I don't expect that my pace will increase over the summer as the weather gets hotter outside, but am hoping that as I get fitter I will find myself faster when Fall arrives.

I would find a plan that you are comfortable with. If it starts with lower mileage than you are running now, just ignore those weeks and run what you have been running until your current mileage matches the plan and then start to ramp it up accordingly.

Try the Run Less Run Faster program, it only requires three runs a week. Theres an app fpr it for like $2.99 which tells you what to run and at what pase based on your 5k time

I've run BIH the last two years (unfortunately, I'm not running it this year because it doesn't fit with my training plan for my first Full).

Best advice I can give it to make sure you are running your share of hills in your training.

There aren't any killer hills in the course (there are a couple of fairly challenging ones, though), but very little of the course is flat.

The area is what you would call "rolling hills" and you are almost always going up or down a noticeable incline.

It is an amazing event... enjoy!
