Calf compression sleeves

I am so excited. I just got a pair of calf compression sleeves. I'd been thinking about doing it for a while but since I've upped my mileage I just feel really tight and sort of shin splinty some times. I've got a 13.1 mile training run tomorrow (longest so far is 12, but I can't just do 13...:ohwell: that 0.1 is going to make me super happy). So. My question is this...I've seen it written every which way. Are you supposed to wear them during runs or just afterward? Are you supposed to wear them for only long runs or only short runs, or wear them for every run and are you supposed to take them off afterwards or just hang out in them for a while after your run? I suppose there are no hard and fast rules but I guess I'm just wondering how people have found works best for them? Happy weekend running everyone!

I wear them for recovery and long runs...sometimes even speed these days...I admit recently I do it for both the feel and the UV protection (I've had some issues there..)0

I was reading an article (sorry I lost the link) but it was saying how certain ones are the "best" for recovery/after run, others the "best" for circulation and others the "best" for shin splints. However, all of them could be used effectively while running. Personally I was about to get some and plan on wearing them under 2 circumstances 1) run 10 miles or more 2) running on cement (rarely do this one but sometimes necessary.)0

I have some that I have started to wear on my long runs (my arch has been aching and I am blaming my calf since rolling my calf helps the arch). My husband keeps asking if the sleeves are helping but I can't answer because I don't know how bad I would feel if I hadn't been wearing them. If nothing else its a great placebo.0

I haven't seen any research that indicates that sleeves improve performance while running. In contrast, there is evidence that recovery is quicker when worn immediately post-run.0 -

The woman I bought mine from at the local running store last week said she wears hers for long runs and then afterward for a few hours. She said if you have the sleeves (as opposed to the socks), you're not supposed to wear them for more than 5-6 hours because there's a risk of blood clots (in your feet I think?).0

Thanks for the replies everyone. I didn't get them really to improve performance while running but the recovery afterward so that's great. I guess my question was just, for recovery afterward do you need to wear them while you are running or just afterward?? I wore them during my 13 mile long run on Saturday and took them off directly afterward. I think I could tell a difference the next day in how my calves felt. They felt better than they have in a while! So, I guess I'm going to keep wearing them during runs and take them off afterward!0

I wear them on runs 15+ miles. I usually keep them on for a while afterwards also. I recently bought a pair of all-in-one socks/ankle compression since my right ankle is sometimes tender on longer runs. To tell the truth, I don't notice much difference in my calves when using the full sleeves or not.0

I wear mine post run, during a run they get to hot for me, but I am a big guy who uses a lot of energy on long runs. I know a lot of ultra runners wear them during runs, but with trail running they also help guard against getting scratched up by weeds and bugs.0
