Monthly Skill

So each month I'm trying to focus on learning/improving a skill. Last month was handstands and the month before was double unders. This month I can't think of anything to work on. Any ideas? I've only been doing crossfit since Dec. so I need practice at nearly everything but find that focusing on one thing helps me more than just doing the skills every once in a while when they come up in a WOD.

All of the lifts are excluded because I only have time to practice before and after class and there just isn't time to move the weights around and its dangerous with people coming and going and nobody actually spotting.

Thanks!

What I think would be awesome is if people did more calisthenics.

    Double unders
    Pull ups
    Toe to bars
    muscle ups
    ring handstand
    handstand walks
burpees to toe to bar to pushups (efficiently)
    rope climbs
    tire flips
    human flag
    front lever
    back lever

just to name a few cool things to learn and do :)

Thanks, that list will keep me busy till the end of the year! I think I'll try the rings for rest of this month (I've never even tried to use them before). A ring handstand might be a bit of a stretch but if I can figure out how to use them that will be a huge improvement.
  • I like the idea of focusing on a different skill every month. I'm working on that as well. I've been working on T2B / kipping or strict pullups with a band after class. I've been doing 5x5 depending on how my grip is treating me.

We are blessed to have a gymnast in our box, and he taught us how to bail out in case your handstand becomes unstable. DEFINITELY learn that first. I hope you have someone proficient available to show you first. :drinker:

I've been working double unders for months and feel like I'm getting nowhere.

What I have learned is to pick a focal point straight ahead and focus on that. The next thing is as long as you can jump with kind of a forward motion only with your feet, (move lower extremities from the hips) it helps a lot. This is more efficient than trying to jump very high. Having a small diagonal with your jump helps on the 2nd swing.

Look at some youtube videos for some tips. There are some really good ones. :drinker:

We had a gymnastics week last week, so these are a (in addition to a lot of the above) some things I can't do that you might not be able to either:

    Skin the cat
    Backwards rolls
Forward roll on the rings (you can scale with bands)

    Pistol Squats

This is what I am working on right now. :)

I disagree with trying ring moves if you don't have the static versions of things down yet. I just went to a CF gymnastics clinic and they stressed that really hardcore. For example, get your dips dialed in between two boxes and your strength built up before you throw in the dynamic element of rings.

pistols are one legged squats holding your other leg out in front of you.

Best way to start is 45lb plate with a medball on it. then work your way down to just the ball, then just doing it.

we do this alot of time skill work with an EMOM of say 10 minutes, max double unders, and max pistols
