Gen Con

Anyone going to Gen Con? Looking for a Wednesday night event. Plus, what plans does anyone have to eat healthy? Every year, the attendance increases, which makes procuring food more and more difficult.

Perhaps my party should hire a ranger or druid to help us find food Downtown?

  • As it happens, I used to live in the Indianapolis area. 3 food recommendations and some other stuff.

Marsh - there are 2 Marsh grocery stores in the downtown area. One or both of them probably has a salad bar.

3 Sisters Cafe - If it is still open, is in BroadRipple and is a vegetarian restaurant. Made it on "Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives".

GO TO - THE SLIPPERY NOODLE!!!! It might just be the best blues bar you've ever been to and it is the oldest bar in Indiana. They are located a short walk from the circle and have turkey burgers. http://www.slipperynoodle.com/index.php

Fountain Square -If you are willing to drive a mile to GenCon, consider getting rooms in the Fountain Square Theater Building. They have swing dance lessons, duck pin bowling, and other events. http://www.fountainsquareindy.com/ Suite 305 is $250 a night but can be split between 4 people. It has a full kitchen so you can turn it into huge savings because you won't have to eat out. You might be able to swing a good discount with them if you are renting for a few days.

The Ordinary - Want to completely blow your diet? Get pizza at The Ordinary in Wanamaker. It is outside the 465 loop to the East of town. Pizza is piled high and baked in a brick oven. http://www.nbopizza.net/

The Handlebar - Get some exercise the fun way. 16 person peddle powered bar that gives you a tour of the downtown area. http://www.handlebarindy.com/

Central Canal - Rent a kayak or paddle boat from White River State Park and tool around on the canal that runs through Indy. http://www.wheelfunrentals.com/Locations/Indianapolis-4
  • Ah, yes...I actually currently live in Indy. Parking at Gen Con is a beast, and once you move out of a garage, daily rates re-start. We try to stay in the area. My friends and I often get bfast on the way in and pack a lunch. But for the "Best Four Days in Gaming," I can only tolerate smooshed sanwhiches so many times.

Thankfully, they have brought in food trucks the last couple of years in the cool park they built for the Super Bowl, but even those lines are 20+ minutes long. Not to mention that, like Farmer's Markets, the yuppies have taken over Food Trucks. Hard to eat at one for less than $10/person.

I have to admit that I'm not going to worry about it too much. I'll bring some healthy snacks, but my eating schedule tends to revolve around the events. Hard to stick with my normal routine and it's a vacation, nice to take a break from the daily grind. You can't really do too much damage unless you just go totally nuts. Last vacation I was on I didn't really count or eat as healthy as I could have and it only set me back about a week overall. Unless you vacation a lot I think it's good to just use your vacations as a time to recharge the batteries. I came back from my last vacation and had no issues going back to my normal routine. Just don't get on the scale for the first week after your vacation. :)
  • Anyone have an "in" to any Wednesday games? We were hoping to go back to Scotty's to play Pathfinder Society, but we got in too late. Even as DM's, they didn't have enough tables to get us in.
