Sore thigh joints, and failure to lift current weight

Does anyone else get the front semi-inner joint of their thighs sore from squatting? Mine are killing me and it makes it hard to do squats. I don't know what's up with this!
I've gone from 95lb squats to 140lb squats in 3 months, running at a 20% deficit. I think I hit the wall on squats. I've been getting really sore in my thigh joints and it makes it hard to continue. This morning was workout 1 out of 3 this week, and I put 140lb on the bar like I have been the last couple weeks to see how it felt...I made it to the 3rd rep of the first set and just wasn't feeling it. It went from tough but doable the last few weeks, to not doable this morning.
I dropped the weight down to 125 and started my sets over again and finished them out, but I was feeling down that I couldn't squat my normal weight.
I don't mind hitting a wall, considering I'm still in a deficit because I still have 20lbs to lose, but failing at a weight I've been lifting for a few weeks already, especially after a two day weekend break was kind of a bummer.

not from squatting (touch wood). but fwiw . . . a number of years ago i had inflammation inside the capsule of one hip joint, and it confused me because where i felt it was in front, kind of right inside the front seam of my underpants. i wouldn't believe it was all the way inside the joint until they strapped me down and filled it with cortisone. nerves are weird in that zone. i went in for that shot swearing blind that it was some kind of issue with the soft tissues outside my pelvic girdle on that side.
if it's specific to a certain point in the squat, or it varies according to your stance, it might just be a motor-mechanics thing. but if it's all the way through the movement and you have trouble with anything that involves a flexed hip, i'd get a doctor to check it out, just to rule out some form of arthritis. i keep a bottle of glucosamine on my kitchen counter these days, just because i never want anything to hurt the way that hurt again.0 -
That's the adductor we're talking about here, right? Groin area? Do you run or do any sports/activites where you would do quick direction changes? I get some pretty intense tightness there when I do sprints or play soccer. Foam rolling helps a ton in my case. Try doing some leg swings before you get into the heavy sets, both front to back and side to side. Make sure you warm-up appropriately, too!
Some days are just lame like that. Don't give up and try again. Poor performance can be due to many factors, but never let it get you down!0 -
Maybe a 20% deficit is too much now that youve got 20lbs to lose. Maybe a 10-15% would help
ETA: Maybe a 1-2week diet break would help as well. It could just be that youve been at a deficit for so long, you're body just needs abreak for a bit0 -
Thanks for the responses.
I am thinking it's the adductor, but not sure since I hadn't heard of it until I started getting sore there and tried looking up what it might be.
I've considered taking a diet break, but there's been a week or so that I've been on vacation that I wasn't logging calories and ate what I want so I'd assume that would have been a break? That was a month ago. Maybe I should to it again.
I was wondering, if I take a break (like no training or diet) for a week or two, would I start back at a lower weight and work up, or do people usually go right back to their last working weight?0 -
Back off by like 10% after a 1-2 week break IMO since you wont have lost much in that time but dont want to jump right back in and potentially hurt yourself. Adjust up or down accordingly0

I get this a lot!! My sister is a division 1 athlete and has a dedicated weight lifting coach. He has them do this specific stretch before they squat:
I also do this before squatting and it helps a lot! I've read that groin tighness with back squats is fairly common...0 -

I agree I do that one as well prior to squatting..but mainly because it's part of my rehab on my gracilis but it helps with the hips too...

Here are lots of stretches etc for hip abductors and gracilis as well...0 -
Thank you for the info on stretches! That'll be useful. :happy:0

What a great and helpful discussion!
I am on week three, with a 15% cut, and frustrated with not sling, but love that my lifting weight is increasing!:happy:0 -
So, I went to step out of my car with my right leg and I got a sharp pain in that joint on the right side. When I take a step with that leg while walking I can feel it, too. My hip keeps popping as well. My left adductor soreness has faded away, but I'm thinking something more might be wrong with the right one. I'm a bit worried now.
I would still like to work out, but I'm probably not going to be able to do squats. I don't know if deadlifts would aggravate this area or not. I hope not, because both those big movements are needed the most.0 -
Go to an orthopaedic doctor and get your hip checked out0

OK, update: Went to physical therapy today for the hip. Turns out it was something called a hip impingement. Basically, my muscles were snagged and pinched in my hip joint. She pulled it out and I'm a bit sore and can't work out my lower body until I see her next week.0

Sorry to hear you have a hip impingement. I hope your PT will help you get back to squatting.0
