2 weeks after...

I've been overweight for the majority of my adult life and I'm now 47 years old. I'm a single dad with a 12 year old daughter and as she continues to grow, I was continually disappointed that my weight frequently prevented me from being able to do all the things with her that I'd like.

A few months back I decided that I had had enough with yo-yo dieting and such so I bit the bullet and had my sleeve surgery on July 22nd, 2014. Two weeks prior to that my Doctor started me on what I guess is the standard pre-op diet and that, combined with the last 2 weeks of protein shakes, broth and jello have gotten me off to a tremendous start... I've lost 42 pounds in less than a month!

Today I begin Phase 3 of the regiment laid out by my surgeon which means that I can begin eating real food again - soft foods... I'm sure you all remember this phase. In many ways I'm looking forward to it, but at the same time the prescribed menu isn't exactly exciting - egg drop soup, pureed meats, beans, etc... But hell, if I can make it through 2 weeks of no solid food, I can certainly do this.

Anyway, I've been reading through this forum and I like the friendly tones and support that everyone shows each other as we all go though this process, so I thought I'd stop in and say hello.

John

Welcome John: Congratulations for making the decision to take back your health. You and your daughter will be every grateful. I do remember that phase and I was so glad when I actually got to chew food again.
You have done great, 42lbs is nothing to sneeze at.
We are all here to help one another, and to give a swift kick in the butt when needed. Everyone is in different stages on their journey, so if you have any questions I am sure you will get many responses.
I was sleeved in Feb2011 lost 180lbs regained 50lb and have lost almost 40 of those. So anything is possible.
The only thing I might suggest is to take advantage of your "honeymoon" period. The first 6 months, this is the prime time to drop weight with little effort. after that you have to put in the work to get the results. Good luck on your new life.

Welcome! You are going to do great! I think you will be surprised how satisfying the mushy food is after being on liquids, and also how little you can really eat. I am not as excited by food as I used to be, and I think that is a byproduct of the WLS. Just remember, when you get to start using a fork/spoon again, that your eyes are bigger than your stomach! This is something I have to constantly remind myself of!! Good luck :)

Congratulations on your weight loss so far! I decided to have the sleeve for the exact reason as you. I have a 12 year old and 9 year old and was finding that my weight was keeping me from enjoying activities with them. Kayaking was the most ridiculous since my end of the boat was sinking and my daughter was about 3 feet up in the air at the other end!

I am one week post-op and am on clear liquids with a couple of protein shakes. I get to start full liquids on Thursday, which means I can add in soup, yogurt and pudding. I envy you being able to start soft foods! I would love some scrambled eggs. There is a website called TheWorldAccordingtoEggFace and she has great suggestions on what to eat at each stage. Feel free to friend me, especially since we are so close in dates. My diary is open to friends, though all you will see now is broth and protein drinks. But come Thursday, I'm going to mix it up!!

Welcome John. This group of individuals are a great resource and support system. I was sleeved in Feb, 2014 and the support from this group has been a great asset to me in my journey.

When I was in the pureed/soft food stage I semi froze my protein shakes and Greek yogurt. This give texture and tastes great, particularly in the Michigan summer.

Welcome John to our family. :flowerforyou:
This is a very supportive place to be regardless of which stage you are at or what topic you want to post on.
I'm in Canada and the surgery is fairly new in my area so it takes longer to get. I hope to be sleeved by October.
Feel free to friend me. My menu is open but I am still pre-surgery. I will do a 2 week fast before the surgery and will only be able to have Diabetic Boost Protein Shakes. It will all be worth it.

Welcome and good luck. It may sound gross but putting beef stew and chicken soup in the blender worked real well at this stage. Once you get past the look and texture you will enjoy the return of flavor. Great way to get in protein.

Your going to do great. Mangopickle is right,,,measure and weigh everything. You'll get used to doing it,,you will almost start doing unconsciously. My scales do not leave my kitchen bench.
After some time getting your head around things you will start to have favourite foods and you will make them easily and fast once you are used to the process. Yes theworldaccordingtoeggface is a great recipe resource. I have just started to seek more variety and this website has been great.
I almost envy that early stage scary unknown but then I am very happy at 5 months out too. It is hard at times but the rewards just seem to outweigh the negatives overall. Love your sleeve and it will love you back.

Welcome, John. You're doing great! 42 pounds in a month is amazing. Keep your eyes on the prize and remember why you started this journey in the first place. You will be amazed at what you can do. My daughter is my biggest supporter and my motivation.

    Welcome!

Wow, 42 pounds in a month is amazing! I lost about that from when I started my journey in January until I was sleeved two weeks ago. I also just started the purée phase. I've been added unflavored protein to most of my foods to make sure I'm getting my protein in. I puréed up some chili and put it over in Stanton mashed potatoes. It tastes almost the same as if I was eating it normally....just have to make sure it's not too spicy, my new stomach doesn't like that!

I'm a single mom to a 3 yr old and she was one of the reasons I made my choice to have the surgery. I just couldn't keep up with her as much as I wanted to.

This is a great group with a lot of wonderful people. Congrats on your progress!

Blended soups and canned chicken w/ avocado were my first soft foods and I stayed with them for about 2 weeks. The new non-protein drink flavors of pretty much anything will be a huge rush at this point so those lame looking foods will pick up in tastiness.
  • I am constantly amazed at how different the pre and post diets are across the country, hell, across the world. Someone in Australia is on Opti-fast pre-op and perhaps post-op - I didn't check.

My nutritionist absolutely forbade the use of Diabetic Boost or Glucerna. She said that it contained way too much sugar, may cause dumping syndrome, and wasn't low-calorie enough and recommended Isopure drinks and other protein shakes that had a minimum of 20 grams of protein per 8 ounces.

I don't know what to think ... but I do know what works for me. Atkins has 15 grams of protein and EAS has 17 grams of protein both with lower carbs and sugars than Boost or Glucerna. So, if you can and they are available, you might want to try those.

As for the puree/mushy stage ... I have done very well on soft fishes (tilapia) and tuna salad with lots (probably too much) low-fat mayo and scrambled eggs. Now at 5 weeks out, I have also been eating sunflower seeds and seafood salads with the white fish / fake crab and again lots of mayo.

    Thoughts anyone?
