Weird feeling during night/hunger?

I am 6 days post sleeve. I am on clear liquids and two milk-based proteins a day. Things are going down well. Last night, I woke up at about 4:00 a.m. with what felt like hunger pains, but the kind that hurt. I was laying flat in my bed so tried propping myself up a little but with not much of a difference. I drank some water and that helped a little bit. Do you think it is hunger or something else? It was definitely uncomfortable bordering on painful. I thought I remembered reading something about this here but I can't find the original post. I do take prilosec every morning. Any thoughts or suggestions?

It could still just be extra acid. The docs put me on a prescription acid reducer, pantoprazole post surgery. I still have some, though I don't take it every day. I keep it around because every few days I'll get that same strange hunger pangish kind of feeling in my stomach, but I'm recognizing it now as acid, not real hunger. Drink water when you get it, to dissolve the acid and give your doctor a call to see if you need something a little stronger than the prilosec. I hope you feel better.0

Thanks! I might try switching the Prilosec to before bed, and see if that helps.0 -
You don't make enough grehlin to experience hunger. Sounds like classic reflux. The pouch is soooo much more sensitive to food. It is like a baby stomach getting used to food all over again, some things just won't sit well. Restaurant food really tears me up because of the salt level. Lunch meat brings on horrible reflux sometimes also due to salt level. If I eat canned soup now I will be in agony at 3 am.0

I'm 2 weeks out and I felt the same way around that time. I thought it was strange too that I was having hunger pains. I called my doctor and was told it was probably acid settling in the stomach. He said it wasn't anything to worry about but boy was it uncomfortable! Hope you feel better.0 -
I take prilosec morning and night. Still. Tried giving up the AM dose and had fantom "hunger"\discomfort so went back on. Also found all of that was much worse the first month and I had to raise the head of my bed for the first 30 days.0

I sometimes have an odd belly feeling if I am up very late at night. It isn't the old "hungry" feeling, but something more akin to feeling empty. It is not uncomfortable, just odd. I usually ignore it and go back to sleep, or have a sip of water, and I am all set.
If you have recurring upper GI discomfort, you should check with your MD. That is not something to mess around with!
I agree with the other commenters that you could be suffering from reflux that is not being adequately controlled by your prilosec. Maybe you need a new Rx, either a different medicine or a stronger dose.
Next time, maybe try chewing on some tums and see if that helps at all.

Thanks everyone! I had it again last night but it wasn't as bad. I was more propped up so I think that helped. I've never had reflux problems before so I have no idea what that would feel like. I thought that was in your throat? I am going to try to take my prilosec at night instead and see if that helps. If not, I'll call the doc.0

I experienced the same thing around the same period after surgery and I've been on prescription Prilosec 40g for years. At my one week post-surgery appointment I mentioned it to my surgeon and she said it was more than likely still some gas from the surgery and my body adjusting to my new greatly reduced stomach. It lasted a couple weeks then it was gone.
Feel better and hope it goes away on its own.0 -
I was always one of those types with a cast iron stomach, but as I gained weight, I noticed that sometimes I got that sour, heartburn kind of feeling. It got worse as I gained weight, but I never treated it. Post -surgery, I sleep on a memory foam wedge I got from the Relax the Back store. It has a knee wedge also and it's necessary because of my chronic back issues. It's helped me be able to sleep in my bed again. Anyway, I noticed after I started using the wedge that I wasn't getting that acid feeling so much. Granted, I'm also losing weight, but I think being propped helped. Sometimes I'll wake up coughing and realize it's the acid. I'm trying to avoid taking the acid reducers everyday because I've heard you can have a rebound effect from going off them and I don't want to get too habituated, but it's on the list of things to discuss with my primary at my next visit. If I need one everyday, then I need one everyday.
I've found that the days I include milk in my diet, I have less issues with the acid. Just an FYI if you are not lactose intolerant. Tums can help, as would chomping on your calcium supplement.0 -
I took my prilosec last night instead of this morning and I didn't have any problems during the night. I did wake up feeling very hungry, but not painfully. I know it isn't real hunger but that's the best way to describe it. I'll keep taking the prilosec at night and hope it is the solution.0

Good for you. Let's hope changing up the Prilosec to the evening solves your problem again tonight. You need to get a good night's sleep.0
