Seriously, the multi-use trails around here exist primarily due to the advocacy and sweat of the local mtn biking community. But while we have the numbers, the MOHA (Mean Old Hikers Association) has the $$ and the time to pester politicians about the evils of bikes on trails. So while I'm a 'by the book' kind of guy, I'll poach a trail every once in a while just out of principle.

A UK centric take on this...

    http://www.cheekytrails.co.uk/main.htm

(we have al sorts of archaic laws (as befits a country that's existed and had laws since before America/Australia and the rest of the former colonies weren't even found) - like "you can ride on a "bridleway" but not on a "footpath" (unless there are local exceptions in place or.... etc. etc...)

We Don't have many complete exclusions... one or two voluntary ones (snowdon path in summer between certain hours iirc) and lots of "National Parks" are quite constrained (if you care about that sort of stuff) BUT, where I live, most of the riding is either bridleways/towpaths/sustrans stuff (all ok) or Footpaths (cheeky) - I tend to only ride the "cheeky" stuff in good weather, so I don't cut it up or leave a trail, and only in times outside where it'll be busy (so not on weekends, bank holidays et al - 10:33am on a tuesday morning is usually fine, and if you meet a "red sock brigade" member, just ding your bell, smile sweetly, and say "cheers mate" as you pass...

Same here. local mtbers have adopted a few of the local trail networks and work with the town to maintain many others, and we are slowly building a better name/image.

Here is what happening in our neck of the woods. Hippie hiker groups and equestrian groups that benefit from all of the new trails and maintenance that mountain bikers build and maintain. What gets me so pissed is we are the ones always at risk for losing trail access, but the horses that ruin and **** on the trails have no access issues:

^^^ YEP ^^^ DORBA (Dallas Off Road Bike Association) has done a fantastic job of working with cities and land owners to get a pretty awesome network of XC MTB trails in the area.
