Stating My Case For Wanting VSG Bariatric Surgery

My current BMI is 49 down from just under 52 in February. My weight has gone from 317 to 294 since February.
Ever since last week when the Dietician, Nurse and Kinisiologist suggested that I was likely a better suited candidate for the Gastric Bypass I have been thinking about being open to either surgeries but I have a strong feeling in my gut that my very sensitive body would respond a lot better to VSG and I would risk having fewer complications with it.
I am not saying this to knock Gastric Bypass as I'm sure it is the best choice for many people and up until a few years ago, it was the only method of WLS surgery available to people and considered the Gold Standard.

I have psoriasis, exczema, allergies & am allergic to 4 families of antibiotics. I also have a Mood Disorder (Bipolar) and think that could also add to the psychological adjustments to your life post surgery. But the main reasons are not the external things that are sensitive to any change or invasion to my body but the INTERNAL workings of my body.

At 23 I had my tonsils removed as an adult. The bleeding wouldn't stop and my throat was cotorized. At 39 I had a ruptured appendix and deep wound infection and was in the hospital for 9 weeks. It didn't help that the idiot surgeon who operated on me when I went to the Emergency wouldn't put me on IV antibiotics. It's a long, horrendous story and as far as I'm concerned his horrible treatment plan along with it being the thickest, fattiest part of my body was the culprit of my suffering and long healing after finally being put on a wound vac machine after having packing done 60 times.
In Canada we do not pay for surgery unless it is elective (cosmetic) but we can fall into hands of the wrong surgeon when we do not have time to research them. It's not as easy to change surgeons here once you see someone.
I have an extremely sensitive body on the outside and inside and I have a feeling I would have a lot of complication and would suffer a lot of misery with having Gastric Bypass. I DON'T THINK IT IS THE SURGERY FOR ME, I THINK VSG IS.

So here is my question to all of you, were any of you pressured by the surgeon to have RNY?
Was it a deal breaker for some of you? That is was VSG or no WLS surgery at all?

I am planning on listing in point form reasons why I only want VSG and reasons why I do not want RNY just in case I am pressured to have RNY when I meet with the surgeon. I will only have 1 meeting with the surgeon so I'm gonna be prepared to fight my battle if need be.

If any of you have any suggestions to help me state my case would you please post them or private message me?
Thanks very much. You guys are like my VSG family and have helped me to much on this journey.
I really appreciate your feedback.

For all I know, the surgeon might not have a problem with my choice. I am very surprised to find out that 2 Canadian provinces do not perform RNY anymore. Perhaps this is happening in the USA as well.

Thanks in advance for your feedback. :flowerforyou:

You know your body better than anyone. I can't imagine how it would have been for me had I needed the RNY. Not to be indelicate, but my bowels have always been like clockwork (every day around the same time). Since the "Sleeve" they are every 3 days or so and are so huge and painful that I shudder to think what they would have been like with the RNY.

I had my 6-month post op check today and the Dr, gave a me a recipe that is made up of applesauce, Prune juice and Bran cereal that I'm to make up for the week and take two tbls a day. I thought it sounded nasty, but the nurse said it tastes just like jelly on toast or a cracker. Hopefully this will do the trick for me as I couldn't get the correct mixture for the over-the-counter or prescription products.

The bottom line for me was that RNY was much too invasive for my body (which is also sensitive to many things), the recovery is much longer and much more painful and I just didn't like the thought of the bypass. I have also read and researched too many cases where the individuals had numerous problems/complications and/or initially lost a tremendous amount of weigh to only gain it all back and then some.(as they thought it was a magic pill and didn't implement any changes in their eating habits).

Of course you need to do what is right for you, but I think you should rely on your instincts.

If RNY was my only choice, I don't think I would have had surgery. I decided on VSG for a lot of reasons: less invasive, normal digestion, ability to take NSAIDs (I have chronic TMJ and take NSAIDS for inflammation and pain). I didn't want dumping or malabsorption.

My stats weren't much different from yours when I started. Weight 275, BMI 44. I had asthma and high blood pressure, but no diabetes. I've done really well with the sleeve and never regretted my choice. You know your body best. Stick to your guns. Best of luck :)

Stick to your guns, it is your body, your life therefore your decision. Best of luck.
