Mini Pill?

Sooo my endo left it up to my gyno to prescribe the "right" bcp for me to help with high testosterone. When I was put on Minastrin my bp was borderline high (138/90) and she said this could raise my bp and wanted to check me in 3 mos. Today was that day. 151/101 YIKES! So what do you know? She said no mo estrogen! She precribed the mini pill (progesterone only). Anyone have experience with this? My endo said the Met can make women pretty fertile, and if the mini is only 91% effective- I'll def be using a back up method.
BUT anyway..will this help my testosterone issues? If not, and its not that great for preventing pregnancy- is there any point to it at all??

Comments/ Concerns?

I dont know anything about this pill and havent been on BCP in years and years. I'm sorry i dont have any more info than that, but with PCOS it'd seem like progesterone based pills would be better than estrogen based pills but I dont know if that will help your testosterone.

Hope someone has info for you!
  • My gyno prescribed Diane 35 (Cyproterone Acetate and Ethinyl Estradiol) for my excess facial hair issues. My doc did tell me that it'll bring down my testosterone levels. This too is a BCP and my BP too is borderline high (120/90). Thats why I am skeptical and have decided not to take it since I have never taken any BCP and managed everything naturally even when I was not planning on becoming pregnant. However, now that I do want to get pregnant in about 6 months or so, I do not want to take BCPs at any cost. Am working on losing 20 pounds in these 6 months. I wish to manage my PCOS naturally as far as possible. Hope I succeed.

Anyways, I've heard that both metformin and spironolactone may help reduce testosterone levels and these two medications wont wreck up your BP. Maybe you could take a second opinion from another gyno.

I've been on the mini pill before, estrogen based pills and I don't get along. They give me migraines. I'm not terribly fertile and I'm not on metformin, so that wasn't a concern for me. However I didn't notice any lessening of PCOS symptoms while on them. ..so I can't say if it did or didn't help definitely or not. I stopped taking them as it seemed pointless, as I wasn't seeing any results and wasn't sexually active.

I think I'm like the opposite of textbook lol, since going off the estrogren based BCP I have had two migraines. The worst being Sunday night- current, and I started my cycle last night. Sooooo I am going to start it today (the mini pill) and see what happens. Thanks for your responses

I've been reading about natural progesterone however, that seems like it might have some very positive results. I'm going to talk to my Naturopathic Doctor when I see her next week and see what she thinks?

Let us know what she says. I did a loading dose of natural progesterone cream the end of last cycle and depending on what my progesterone numbers came back as, might be doing another loading dose this cycle. The theory is it lets my ovaries know what I'm supposed to be producing and when, and after a few months, usually 4-6 you dont do the progesterone that cycle and see if your ovaries do it themselves. Granted this is along with vitex/maca/etc which is to work over time to increase your production of progesterone also.

Daughter's period was almost 3 months late, so we did the progesterone cream according to the directions to get it to start and it worked like a charm, but the doctor wants her to start EPO and Vitex also to get her cycles back to where they should be. She's got PCOS too.
